16 year olds are children.
And they shouldn’t have the vote.

Society needs to stop putting adult responsibilities onto children. No matter how politically literate or mature or well-spoken a child is, they are still a child.

At 16, I was sofa-surfing and working three jobs to survive. Most days, I would leave school unsure of whether I would have a safe place to rest my head.

My local council and social workers failed to support me, even insisting that I was “mature enough” to deal with my situation on my own.

I was a child.

Yet, I was failed by the services that were supposed to protect me. But I was treated like an adult and made to take on responsibilities that no child should.

By giving children the vote, we are forcing them into the adult world before they are ready. We are robbing them of their childhood and expecting them to “advocate for themselves” when that simply isn’t their responsibility.

Children don’t need the vote.

They need the adults around to care for them, fight for them, and advocate on their behalf.

If a 16 year old isn’t mature enough to buy alcohol, get married without parental consent, take out a loan, or join the army, then they aren’t mature enough to vote.

I know the injustice of giving a 16 year old adult responsibilities when they are still a child. I know first-hand the damage that is done when society forces a child to grow up too soon.

16 year olds are children.
Not “young adults”.

Let them be children.
