Part 2.
Here's why I think the market is about to start down into a larger degree intermediate cycle low (ICL), smaller degree than a 4 YCL).
Tech is starting to diverge.
The Nasdaq composite has formed a double top and has now made not only two lower highs, but two lower lows. It's starting to stair step down. This is a fairly reliable sign that the larger degree intermediate cycle has entered the declining phase of its intermediate cycle.
The tech sector is leading and showing cracks. The rest of the market will eventually follow. The banks (BKX) made a lower low on Friday. Watch the SPX in the coming week(s) for a lower low as confirmation the larger cycle has rolled over.
ICL's can be mild and only drop 5-7%, but they can also be severe and shave off 10-15%. The first isn't that hard to weather. If it's the second, that can be damn hard to stomach without panic selling at the bottom.
Generally speaking this late in the 4 year cycle, and stretched this far above the long term mean (200 week moving average) there isn't a lot of upside potential at this point, but there is a lot of downside risk. IMO one would be better off not trying to catch every last penny and just get on the sidelines (some of the short term bond funds have very attractive yields in the 4-5% range) and wait until the ICL runs its course over the next 1-2 months.
At that point you could re enter, but be on the lookout for the divergences I mentioned in the previous posts once price recovers the all-time highs again.
