Veteran actress #SowcarJanaki, one of the most respected and enduring artistes of Indian cinema, passed away on Friday, August 21, at the age of 94. She breathed her last at 1.59 pm.

Born Sankaramanchi Janaki, she was a celebrated actress whose career spanned more than seven decades. She worked extensively across #Tamil, #Telugu, #Kannada and #Malayalam cinema and acted in more than 400 films during her illustrious career.

Sowcar Janaki was known for her versatility and ability to portray a wide range of characters across generations. Beginning her career at a time when the South Indian film industry was undergoing major changes, she went on to establish herself as one of the most accomplished senior artistes in Indian cinema.

Her contribution was not limited to a single language or generation. Over the course of her career, she shared the screen with several leading actors and worked with prominent filmmakers, leaving a lasting mark on Tamil and other South Indian film industries.

In recognition of her distinguished and lifelong contribution to Indian art and cinema, the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on Sowcar Janaki in 2022. The prestigious civilian honour recognised her decades-long contribution to the performing arts and Indian cinema.

Sowcar Janaki was married to Sankaramanchi Srinivasa Rao. The couple had three children — Yagna Prabha Koty, Venkataramana Sankaramanchi and Sachi Rao. She is survived by four grandchildren — Vaishnavi Aravind, Dev Prasad Koty, Dr Sanjai Rao and Rishi Sankaramanchi — as well as four great-grandchildren.

Following her death, her mortal remains will be kept at Centaph Road in Teynampet, #Chennai, from 5 pm on Friday for relatives, friends, colleagues and members of the public to pay their last respects.

The death of Sowcar Janaki marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the history of Indian cinema. With a career that stretched across more than 70 years and hundreds of films in multiple languages, she remained a respected presence in the industry and continued to be remembered for her remarkable body of work and contribution to Indian cinema.

Her passing is a major loss to the Indian film fraternity and to generations of audiences who admired her work.

New team to count Ram Mandir donations in two shifts under SBI supervision. In the wake of the donation theft row, the Ram Temple trust in Ayodhya has deployed a new team for the counting of cash offerings in donation boxes, introducing a two-shift system under the supervision of the State Bank of India (SBI).

According to temple management, a team of 10 to 12 people has been deployed in each shift. The first shift operates from 8 am to 2 pm, while the second runs from 2 pm to 8 pm.
