DEFRA's response:

"In 2024, an estimated 214.6 million animals (20.7%) were slaughtered to produce halal meat of which an estimated 27.0 million animals were slaughtered for halal meat without being stunned."

ALL animals should be humanely slaughtered, that means NOT halal.

I asked the Government to ban halal slaughter - sadly, they refused. Causing animals unnecessary pain and severe suffering is pure cruelty, and not the British way.

We should slaughter our animals in a method that is as humane as possible.

Halal slaughter should be banned.

Stuff has unsurprisingly published an opinion piece today by ‘Jehan Casinader’ who decided to give his ‘insights’ on NZ First’s stance that the public service needs to hire people based on merit not on woke ‘DEI’ ideology.

Putting aside him spouting a number of lies, Casinader decided to conveniently neglect to mention that all we are wanting is to remove the blatant provisions in legislation that mandate that DEI is promoted ahead of merit. Why would he disagree with that?

He then for some strange reason decided to compare MMP and my career with ‘diversity’ and that somehow I was the beneficiary of ‘DEI’ in our democracy. Newsflash: NZ First began under FPP.

The irony is that democratic elections are the ultimate form of ‘meritocracy’.

New Zealanders don’t care what race, colour, or religion you are, nor if you identify as a multicoloured VW Beetle - they care that you can get the job done.

If he is so confident that people agree with him that “DEI is good and merit is bad”, perhaps he should stand for election and find out that the vast majority of New Zealanders disagree with him.

Let’s see how ‘DEI’ works for him then.

A country that's always had great respect and relationships with our animals over centuries

We must care for all animals wether domestic or those reared for farming

The fact halal slaughter has made its way into Britain is a disgrace to our welfare standards and culture

We have campaigns actively trying to ban exercising with hounds which doesn't harm anyone and is natural and goes back centuries

Yet allow and ignore such abhorrent inhumane activities
