In a speech from George Washington’s historic desk, surrounded by new citizens, he highlighted Lenape history and those other figures whose names grace our bridges and rivers — but erased the Italian explorer who opened the door to the New World.

This isn’t a random omission.

Mamdani has a well-documented history of contempt for Columbus: In 2020, he posted himself flipping the bird at the Columbus statue in Astoria (in his own district) with the caption “Take it down.” Italian-American groups rightly called it out as an attack on their heritage.

Question for New Yorkers: On the 250th anniversary of America, should our mayor be erasing key figures from our founding story to push a divisive narrative — or celebrating the bold explorers who helped build this exceptional nation?
