Was asked to give career advice to someone seeking high-impact business career, and considering law or business school as path to get there.

Given how many young men are similarly situated, I’m sharing my typical advice here:

1) I hesitate to recommend law school to anyone not focused on a legal career. Top law schools can open a few other paths, but even then this is uncertain and often expensive way to get there. This may make sense if you can get into top law school (HYS) or get a full scholarship to one of the next 5-10 schools.

2) For banking, consulting, and strategy roles, it’s usually critical to be in a select set of networks around people hiring in these spaces, and even then difficult without good credentials. Top MBAs can put you in such pipelines, but also expensive and diminished return versus a decade ago.

3) Best path I’d recommend to most people who want to break in to this type of career w/o access to typical on-ramps is to A) get very good at leveraging AI and other tech (something you can do on your own), and B) build operating skills in some other domain that is more accessible. Then find a company (especially a growing one) and role that lets you leverage these skills and proactively take on as much responsibility as you can, while jumping at any opportunities to network in or around your industry. This can become a fast track to executive responsibility, because you bring new skill that many recognize the need for, and you’ll have insight into how to apply to specific problems in your industry. Even if you cap out at your first company, you’ll now have a valuable skillset you can take to other companies or consulting firms.

@bobbyfijan This is why I don’t buy into the argument that we should never post our kids on social media. If people with large happy families didn’t post photos of their kids, some people would never see any. (Obviously I take issue with overposting and with posting vulnerable things.)

@bobbyfijan My kids are bound to use “queer” in regular conversation. It’s in about half of our homeschool books. And I would probably be censored if I typed the verb that is on multiple pages of Five Little Peppers.
