🚨🚨BREAKING NEWS: Thousands of hotel workers are back on picket lines as the #SoCalHotelStrike sweeps across LA and Santa Monica. Traveling to LA for the @APSAtweets conference? Don’t be a scab! Who’s on strike?
The U.S. Department of Education just granted Baylor University a Title IX exemption for sexual harassment.
This is the first time that a university has requested a religious exemption to permit sexual harassment and the first time the DoED has granted such a request. (🧵)
Funniest thing is U-M phrasing firing a striking worker as simply being banned from your course and not paid (which is literally firing them!). People fired for striking have legal rights, U-M doesn't want to give workers those rights. So they're trying to avoid the word.
two biggest cop unions in france (representing over 50% just publicly called for "open combat" against "vermins", taking up arms against them "using all available methods", and that they are "warning the government" that they will "take action" and "judge the [govt's] actions"
Free university will do much more for diversity than any admissions initiative ever will. Lots of discussion about how university diversity doesn't match public high school diversity without acknowledging the most fundamental difference between the two. One is free! One isn't!
I wrote for @Harpers about who might actually be behind the more than 100,000 killings and disappearances in Mexico since 2006 via a review of two books:
@Oswaldo__Zavala "Drug Cartels Do Not Exist"
& @benjamintsmith7 "The Dope"

@JordanAckerMI Also, Rackham Plan was horrendously over what they budgeted for it this year, tons of issues. Some still haven't been paid. They're looking at cutting it back in the future. It's not unreasonable for workers to want the pay that makes their salary livable to be in a contact.
@JordanAckerMI Rackham Plan only covers some people though. GEO's current proposal is a 7% raise plus summer pay (.25 if worked 1 semester during year, .5 rate if 2 semesters). It doesn't stack with those receiving Rackham Plan under the current rules and makes all grad workers able to live.
We are shocked - but, as grad students ourselves, tragically unsurprised - to learn of Stephenson’s abuse of two graduate students & U-M ECRT’s abhorrent failure to handle their cases with care and dignity. (🧵1/7)

I always reflect on this Schnaiberg quote to check myself: "…it is never sufficient to point to the environment as having been protected. The question must always be asked, for whom and from whom?" 4/4
I am limited to 10 additional hours per week of outside work (for U-M or any outside employer). My international colleagues are allowed 0 hours. Our salary needs to be able to cover cost of living, but the state says it doesn't even cover food.
According to the state of Michigan, my GSI salary makes me eligible for food stamps. U-M admin has created a situation of food and housing precarity for its instructors, yet insists that everything is fine.
I came home to my grandmother watching some cop show (the carers put on TV for her) but the plot is that a political science professor convinces their students to bomb a building in the name of anti-capitalism? My dude I cannot convince students to come to class.
My thesis examiners passed my PhD thesis with ZERO corrections. One of their comments was that 'it was extremely well written'.
How? I used to read a lot of papers and take note of their writing style.
