PlayStation fans are massively cancelling their PS Plus subscriptions to protest Sony’s move toward a digital-only future.
Many players are sharing screenshots of their cancelled subscriptions online, this is one of the few ways gamers can send a clear message to Sony that they want games on physical discs.
Money is the only language these companies understand.
Everyone is worried about game ownership and preserving games
Keep the backlash.
The PlayStation post about the end of physical media has been Community Noted.
It has also received nearly 70,000 replies, with people extremely mad about it. This could be one of the Playstationbiggest backlash in recent years.
PlayStation has also stopped posting since announcing the change.
“Digital purchases grant a revocable license to access content, not ownership. Sony recently removed hundreds of purchased StudioCanal movies from libraries due to licensing.”
A Steam Machine owner says their system died after only about 20 minutes of use, making it what looks like the first reported Red Line of Death (RLOD) case.
The console won’t boot anymore, and according to Valve’s support guide, the red LED pattern points to a GPU hardware failure.
Since the GPU is built into the motherboard, it isn’t user-replaceable, so the system will most likely need to be repaired or replaced under warranty.
The name “Red Line of Death” is a reference to Xbox 360’s Red Ring of Death.

Sony has also officially announced that the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita will be permanently shut down in phases.
Once the store closes:
>You will no longer be able to buy games, DLC, or other digital content on these systems.
>Sony says you’ll still be able to download previously purchased content for the foreseeable future, but no guarantee has been given that this will be permanent.
-PS3
Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua: Store closes starting August 2026.
Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries: late 2026.
All remaining regions: July 2027.
-PS Vita
The PlayStation Store will close globally in July 2027.
Sony says the decision is due to the PlayStation Store moving toward modern commerce and payment systems that the PS3 and PS Vita can no longer support, and because it wants to focus resources on newer PlayStation platforms.
Sony’s stock rose more than 3% after the company announced it will stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028.
Apparently, investors see the move as a way for Sony to increase profits, as selling games digitally eliminates the costs.
Sony said nearly 80% of full-game sales on PS4 and PS5 are already digital, up from 13% when the PS4 launched in 2013.
I don't think they will walk back on this decision even with all the backlash.
Sony’s move away from game discs will also affect one of its biggest factories.
Sony’s decision to stop releasing new PlayStation games on discs from 2028 won’t just affect players. It will also change how one of the company’s biggest factories operates.
Sony’s factory in Thalgau, Austria, currently produces around 600,000 discs every day. PlayStation discs make up about 50% of the factory’s production, and new game releases account for around 20% of that.
Sony DADC CEO Dietmar Tanzer said: “PlayStation is currently around 50% of our volume, and around 20% of that is new releases. We are talking about roughly 10% of our total volume in 2028.”
