According to the legend, Lady Godiva's (real name Godgifu) story is told exactly like this:
In the 11th century, she begs her husband Leofric (Earl of Mercia) to lower the heavy taxes, and he says:
"If you ride naked on horseback through the city of Coventry."
Godiva does this (covered only by her long hair), and the entire city folk respectfully close their windows.
The story was recorded in the 13th century by Roger of Wendover, but modern historians do not consider it a real event; it's probably a medieval legend with no historical evidence. Still, it's a classic tale.
This is a painting drawn later! It's the famous 'Lady Godiva' oil painting made in 1898 by the English painter named John Collier.
