This was a fun project to build; hopefully people also find it useful.

Hedge funds pay big $$$ for this data but I want to make it available to everyone!
I have some important news to share.
After almost a year since I started https://t.co/WcXlfxv3Ah, I will be making the last daily update on Sunday, March 7, in concurrence with the end of @COVID19Tracking.
I share my thoughts on my blog:

My advice to others like me:
Age is just a number. You don't need decades of experience to be able to think critically & adapt. In this digital age where information is so readily available, don't let a lack of domain expertise deter you from pursuing what you find interesting!
I had a great conversation with @ashleevance for @BW. He captured my story very well, better than I could have myself! Of course, I was only able to do what I did by building off of the work of so many others.

If you don't know the story of @youyanggu, the remarkable 27-year-old data scientist who did some of the best modeling and most accurate projections throughout the pandemic, and is still at it for vaccines/herd immunity, here's our conversation
https://t.co/SlMnaaxfE7 @Medscape
With that said, let's put things to perspective:
While the COVID-19 vaccine may be more unpleasant than the flu vaccine, severe side effects are very low (<5%). And it's a lot better than actually getting COVID-19. Or seeing our loved ones get it.
The vaccine will save lives.
Many people are unaware that the COVID-19 vaccine has significantly more side effects than the flu vaccine. I hope to see more honest discussions regarding this.
Props to @Cat_Ho for her realistic, data-centric reporting of this issue. It's much needed.

I don't want to spark a political debate here. I just hope that more people can recognize that the news we consume online can be inherently biased. They often serve to fuel division (and clicks).
The sooner we can recognize that, the sooner we can come together.
Last week, Illinois reported 15,415 cases in a single day, more than Florida ever did in a single day. This is despite Illinois' population being 40% lower.
Many of you probably did not know the dire situation in Illinois. That's because no mainstream media chose to report it.
I'm relaunching https://t.co/WcXlfxv3Ah.
It's a completely new model that I put together over the past day that estimates true infections in the US and all 50 states.
For this project, I am nowcasting (what has happened) rather than forecasting (what will happen).
So to conclude, we should not be thinking about Covid risks from an individual perspective, but rather from a community perspective. Our actions directly and indirectly affect those around us.
If I was able to change just one person's view with this thread, then it was worth it.
So I hope we can all agree that we can do a better job of protecting ourselves and others.
If simple actions such as wearing a mask can reduce even a single infection, that can stop a whole chain of transmission. There is widespread scientific consensus:
https://t.co/gxk5H2slym
If Rt increases to 1.2, then 130 people will have been infected after 3 months. All stemming from 1 infection.
The chance that at least 1 person among the 130 will die is non-trivial (~50%).
That's why we need to view COVID-19 as a *community risk*, not an *individual risk*.
9/30 Weekly https://t.co/WcXlfxv3Ah Update:
We forecast 24,000 (13-42k) additional reported deaths in the US by November 1 (~750/day).
Nov 1 Total Deaths Forecasts:
Today: 230k (219-248k)
Last week: 223k (213-238k)
2 weeks ago: 219k (208-233k)
4 weeks ago: 219k (205-240k)
Let’s make a deal, Mr. President:
You release your college transcript, I’ll release mine, and we’ll see who was the better student.
Loser has to fund the Post Office.
Today I'm giving a talk about https://t.co/WcXlfxv3Ah at 2pm ET / 11am PT as part of the Marketplace Algorithms and Design seminar: https://t.co/x3f4WbL5Tn
I will be joined by Professor Vivek Farias of MIT. Join us on the live stream at 2pm ET: https://t.co/SYo7oLJIqt
The first rule in data science is: correlation != causation.
To conclude, I think we should be careful in attributing causations behind recent declines in cases when they are merely correlations. We cannot cut corners, even if it's a means to an end.
More research is needed.
Kinda surreal when the President starts accusing your 75 yr old friend of being an agent of ANTIFA.
My friend Martin Gugino is an old man with cancer who is now in the hospital with brain damage after being pushed to the ground by a police officer he was trying to talk to.
