Here’s your friendly reminder that bodily autonomy doesn’t begin or end at reproductive rights. It includes the right to use (ALL) drugs/substances. Everyone uses drugs.
If we want to actually do something about the cartels, we can start by ending the War on Drugs. We already ran this experiment with the mob during Prohibition. Turns out banning things just made organized crime richer. A regulated drug market is safer for everyone.
Check out The Price of Mercy by @galvinalmanza. It’s not a book about prison abolition but you may find yourself a prison abolitionist when you’re done. It is incredible and heartbreaking at the same time. It also includes a great conversation with my friend @stephenhrnrp.
One of the most disgusting things about opioid crisis propaganda is that every patient in pain is simply lying to get drugs, and even pet owners. You know, they're all just breaking their pets' legs for one pain pill. The damage done in the name of "prevention" is astounding.
@Nevin99999@stephenHRNRP If folks had a choice between uncontaminated, properly dosed drugs & whatever drug soup the cartel is shilling…it’s not a difficult decision to make.
Rolling back opioid prescribing restrictions is necessary. Cutting people with chronic pain off from their meds has pushed them to the street supply, where overdose risk is far greater. This was bad policy from the start. It’s okay to admit a mistake has been made. #CPP
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea Unfortunately in the U.S. this isn’t the case. Most of those who use syringes are not in programs. And syringes are definitely not only used for IV heroin use. Reducing access to sterile supplies doesn’t reduce use, it only increases resource utilization for preventable diseases.
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea Drug use is a normal part of human life throughout recorded history. There’s risks to many choices we make on a daily basis, that’s why we ensure we’re knowledgeable about risks & safeguards are in place. This would be a start.
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea 2- The norm now is for pts w lifelong debilitating disabilities so painful they’re bedridden &unable to participate in their lives, but most lived productive fulfilling lives thanks to a med that they’re now denied, leaving self medication as the only viable option for many.
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea 1-You’re making grand generalizations about drug use. I have no problem with what folks do to get by as long as there is a way to minimize the “unhealthy & unsafe” parts.
Many miss a crucial piece of this puzzle. Even cancer pts are denied pain relief at the end of their lives.
@MamaBear5563 The hospital should be providing individualized, compassionate care TO ALL pts. Trust NOONE is going anywhere near the ER to be treated like a criminal & denied ANY & never adequate pain relief. There’s a reason for the enormous influx of self medicating resulting in OD crisis.
@awawawhoami All of the fun things people want to do have been made illegal, and the government intentionally is making them as dangerous as possible with the policy.
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea What’s my grift? . I don’t make any money from my own experiences and years of studying and learning about the history and evolution of drug prohibition. I pay taxes and I’m involved in local politics and my community. There’s no one size fits all answer, but it’s pretty close…
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea That’s never been a solution for any of our problems. Maybe if you have such a strong interest in the issue you could learn about interventions & strategies that actually address the root issues…
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea The illicit drug market has responded exactly as expected to drug prohibition. As criminalization increases, the market responds with more potent (cheaper to traffick) drugs. This ensures improper dosing & unknown contaminants. See alcohol prohibition.
@BradleyRHaywood Now let’s stop prosecuting paraphernalia charges and residue! And maybe we should end the practice of using inaccurate & incredibly harmful urine drug screening for people on probation, parole, & other drug related programs.
@sp123456561@DrugEquality@abolishthedea Consenting adults should be free to treat their own bodies without criminalization. This freedom should exist unless their actions impede on the rights and freedoms of anyone else. Drug use most often is unproblematic & doesn’t result in “addiction”.
