@susangbarber I'm a fan of a "one-minute essay" at the end of class, which I borrow from John Bean (in Engaging Ideas). It's a quick formative assessment where Ss can summarize, argue, ask questions--whatever the day calls for. The Ss inevitably write more than I expect, even in a short time.
