This might seem to you like some nerds side project, and while it is technically, it is also much more important than you think.

Historically, whenever anything is made transparent to the voting bloc it undergoes radical change.

Every. Single. Time.

To the extent governments work overtime to make things opaque. (And I expect that to happen to this dataset too very soon, in a thousand different ways.)

The internet makes everything including politics “global/local” and local laws won’t escape.

It’s hard to understand right now how profound this will be, but we live in interesting times for sure.

As a Marine Corps veteran, I’m sick and tired of people telling me I’m wrong about “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. I’ve known this for decades.

Here are the straight facts:
These members are professional musicians — top-tier, experienced artists who go through an extremely competitive audition process. They are not regular recruits.

This was established by Congress in 1798.

Once selected, they enlist under a special contract for duty with the U.S. Marine Band only. They are directly appointed to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). And yes — they are exempt from Marine Corps Recruit Training (boot camp). No Parris Island, no Quantico, no San Diego

Unlike every other Marine band, “The President’s Own” has no secondary combat role. They exist solely for their musical mission: performing for the President, White House events, and national ceremonies. They are still active duty Marines subject to the UCMJ and military standards, but their path is unique by design and regulation.

If you’re out here arguing with actual US Marine Corps veterans about this, do yourself a favor and read the official Marine Band career documents instead of running your mouth.
