The reason I'm thinking about this, is because people talk about it like it's a thing neurotypical people just do. But I think it's a very learned behavior.
I've been forming this thought for awhile and am curious about people's opinions: Is eye contact a performative (not instinctive) gesture used in specific situations to indicate attentiveness (eg. talking to a client, flirting, etc.)?
My opinion: Heck, yes. It doesn't come naturally to me, and if I'm holding a conversation with someone, I am ๐ฏ watching their mouth anyway to improve comprehension.
