BREAKING: Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino hits back hard after Donald Trump ludicrously suggests that the United States should seize back control of the Panama Canal in an imperialist power grab.

"Panamanians may have different views on many issues. But when it comes to our canal, and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag," said Mulino.

He added that "every square meter of the Panama Canal and the surrounding area belongs to Panama and will continue belonging so."

Trump stated in a controversial speech that President Jimmy Carter "foolishly" ceded control of the crucial shipping lane. He lambasted the "ridiculous" fees that Panama charges for transit and claimed that we are "being ripped off at the Panama Canal."

"If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly and without question," Trump said.

Mulino is having none of it—

"The tariffs are not set on a whim," stated Mulino. He also explained that Panama has expanded the canal to increase shipping traffic "on its own initiative." The tariffs help pay for it.

The United States handed over control of the canal to Panama in 1999, a result of a treaty that President Jimmy Carter signed in 1977.

American control of the canal was understandably deeply unpopular with the people of Panama. It belongs to them. There is no going back.
