@jezzajones33@FOXFOOTY Classic outcome bias. We see a ball 40m nearly in front and assume it's a 95% certainty. In reality, historical AFL data puts that shot under clutch pressure at 63%, missing 1/3. Membrey held his full 30s routine & missed by 1.8degrees. Heartbreaking outcome, but not a choke.
@RalphyHeraldSun The 29 seconds is also crucial from a sport psychology lens. When athletes choke under pressure, they almost always rush their pre-performance routine to escape the anxiety. Membrey held his exact rhythm and composure. It was a 63% shot that missed by less than 2 degrees.
Why do the best players underperform? Australia’s stunning World Cup upset over a much-fancied Türkiye side perfectly illustrated the brutal reality of the practice-match performance gap. It wasn't a deficit of tactical drilling or physical conditioning that derailed the favourites. It was a classic cognitive trap.
When expectations skyrocket, self-presentation concerns, the exhausting anxiety of trying to manage how teammates, fans, and the media perceive you, take over. Driven by a fear of public failure, an elite player attempts to micro-manage skills that should be entirely automatic. A footballer who has struck a ball for two decades suddenly begins consciously monitoring their kicking. By trying to force perfection, they disrupt the fluid muscle memory built over thousands of training hours. They underperform not because they forgot how to play, but because they tried too hard to control what they already know how to do.
Traditional psychological skills, like self-talk or breathing routines, often act as short-term fixes. They quiet the mind temporarily but fail to challenge the root cause of the anxiety: the athlete's rigid, underlying irrational beliefs. This is why Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) is becoming a game changer in elite sports
Using the ABCDE model, REBT dismantles the absolute demands athletes place on themselves. It shifts a player from a fragile mindset (“I must be flawless, or I am a failure”) to a flexible, flexible preference (“I want to win, but a mistake does not define my worth”). When practitioners strip away the irrational demand for perfection, the fear of failure evaporates. The urge to manually control the skill vanishes, allowing athletes to play as freely in a packed World Cup stadium as they do on an empty training pitch.

At 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is masterclassing Approach Coping. In high stakes matches, an athlete’s strategy determines whether they achieve ‘clutch’ mastery or fall into the ‘choke’. Approach coping transforms a threat into a puzzle. Facing Jasprit Bumrah, Sooryavanshi doesn’t just slog; he gathers data and analyses wrist positions even from the non-striker’s end. He leans into pressure to reclaim control, treating high-stakes moments as problems to be solved rather than storms to be weathered. Conversely, avoidance is the performance paradox. By trying to survive a spell, a batter becomes static, switching from playing to win to playing not to lose. In the attempt to buy time, they hand the bowler all the power. When a batter stops threatening the scoreboard, they invite the very attack they fear most. To pivot, elite athletes require a One-Step Shift. This involves forcing a single proactive action: asking where the next run is coming from or taking a purposeful breath to reset their footwork. Motion is the antidote to paralysis. By moving decisively towards the threat, the athlete proves that they, not the pressure, are dictating the terms of the game. #IPL #VaibhavSooryavanshi #approachcoping #performancepressure
In the AFL/AFLW, we worship the 'monastic' single-identity footballer: the first in, the last out, who thinks of nothing but the Sherrin. But what if the very thing that makes footballers elite is the same thing making them fragile? We reward the intensity of stars like Nick Daicos, Zach Merrett, and Jasmine Garner. Yet, Identity Foreclosure leaves elite performers vulnerable to severe psychological distress the moment the athlete role is disrupted by injury, deselection, or retirement. High performance isn’t about narrowing athletes' focus until nothing else exists; it’s about increasing self-complexity to broaden their foundation. Stop training purely for the present; diversify your identity to sustain your future and your psychological health. #AFL #AthleticIdentity #Selfcomplexity #Highperformancepsychology
Why do the Richmond Tigers keep missing goals? Fans demand more practice, but sport psychologists suggest better pre-performance routine (PPR). Vlastuin shared today they ‘nail them’ at training, but game day brings the yips. This is a focus deficiency. https://t.co/Qt1uWAqt24

@CoachHesson Congrats on being appointed RCB's Director of Cricket Operations. Wanted to discuss a great research idea working with you and Dr. Matt Slater (MSc, PhD, CPsychol, FHEA, & Author) How best to speak?
Persuasion: Are you warm and competent? Given that individuals (as well as robots!) perceived with more warmth and competence have more power to influence us, it can be a powerful influencing tool https://t.co/oK9BlWDFuk
Can the difference in Achievement Motivation explain the gap? While there are many factors including strong social norms and women choosing lower paid careers, there are personality differences. Help women less fear of failure https://t.co/Xomo7tPqar
