Poems are kinda tough to teach in a test-based school system, so instead they’re often framed more like riddles, as things that need to be “figured out” or “solved.” To me, the difference is:
Riddles have 1 answer.
Poems have 0 answers, but many secrets.
Y'all gotta quit lying to young writers and telling them they need to write everyday. Nah, y'all need to go watch a movie. Listen to folklore. Talk to your friends. That's what's going to make the work sing. I think we forget that being a human is central to being an artist too.
Writers: If you are submitting something you strongly believe in and it keeps getting rejected, please keep sending it out. Often our strongest work gets rejected the most before it gets taken. This is the truth.
