The inspection and registration of water vessels is now actively underway at the 5 Operational Search and Rescue (SAR) Centres across Uganda’s waters.

Unlike before, these services are now closer to users, with fully operational SAR centres strategically established across major water bodies—making it easier, faster, and more convenient for vessel owners to access inspection, licensing, and safety support services.

These centres are part of a nationwide maritime safety system designed to improve emergency response, reduce accidents, and promote compliance. Each facility is equipped with modern rescue tools and also serves as a hub for vessel registration and enforcement of safety standards.

@HonByamukama, the Minister of State for Transport, has officially commissioned Uganda’s 44th trail bridge.

The 68-metre hybrid trail bridge, located in , will provide safe and reliable passage for an estimated 400 community members every day — improving connectivity, access to services, and local livelihoods.

🚧Nyahuka–Mirambi Bridge in Bindibugyo District.

A new bridge is now under construction, engineered with a 120-year lifespan and designed to withstand the natural disaster–prone conditions along the Nyahuka River.

Implemented by the local contractor Ruwangananyama Engineering Services Ltd, this project will significantly enhance daily life by providing:
Safe and reliable passage for over 1,800 school-going children
Improved access to local markets
Faster, more dependable access to health facilities on both sides of the river

Construction officially commenced on April 1, 2025, with completion expected on April 1, 2026.

New Bridge Site 🚧

Nyahuka–Mirambi Bridge in Nyahuka Town Council, Bwamba County, Bundibugyo District.

The scope of works includes:
🚧Temporary river diversion and construction of coffer dams
🚧Excavation and foundation works for all structures
🚧Construction of a 20-metre reinforced concrete single-span bridge
🚧Construction of the road embankment and 0.663 km of gravel approach roads
🚧River training and protection works upstream and downstream, including erosion control using reinforced concrete retaining walls and gabions

The Division of Drainage Structures, in partnership with Bridges to Prosperity (B2P), is currently undertaking a hands-on training in the maintenance of the Kama Trail Bridge in Sironko.

This exercise focuses on replacing the original timber decking with durable galvanized steel — a major step toward safer, longer-lasting connectivity for the community.

Kama Trail Bridge was B2P’s first demonstration bridge, built with a timber deck, but rapid deterioration of the planks soon posed a safety risk.

To ensure sustainable maintenance across all trail bridges built across hard to reach mountainous parts of the country, the Ministry is empowering District Engineering teams through practical, on-site training to ensure sufficient local capacity to build and maintain trail bridge assets thereby prolonging their lifespan.
