सही बात है। विपक्ष की राजनीति पचास के दशक में बड़ी आसान थी जब एस पी मुखर्जी को जेल में मार दिया गया। साठ के दशक में और आसान तब हुई जब दीनदयाल जी को मार दिया गया। सत्तर के दशक में तो हलुआ थी जब विपक्ष को जेल में ठूँस कर संविधान तक में संशोधन संसद से पास करवा लिए गए। दो हज़ार चार से चौदह तक तो विपक्ष की राजनीति रबड़ी थी!

बस पिछले दस वर्षों से आसान नहीं है क्योंकि विपक्ष डेढ़ दर्जन बार कोशिश करने के बावजूद लोकतंत्र को बचाने के नाम पर देश में आग नहीं लगा पा रहा है। बिल्कुल आसान नहीं है विपक्ष की राजनीति क्योंकि देश की जनता हर बार विपक्ष के आगे खड़ी होकर उसे हरा देती है, पोलिंग बूथ में भी और उसके बाहर भी।

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who helped save 166 Israelis aboard a Flydubai flight, has a surname with deep Gujarati roots.

Machchhar is associated with the Gujarati Naagar Brahmin community, a distinguished community that has also produced surnames such as Mankad, Mankodi, Hathi and Ghoda.

And there is a striking coincidence: Machchhar is among the words associated with vigour, passion, जुनून and जोश in the Bhagvad Gomandal Kosh, the authoritative Gujarati encyclopaedia, Vol. 7, p. 6873.

Smit has lived up to the name.

Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah have been following the health condition of Mr Smit Machchhar, the brave Indian pilot of Flydubai flight that was diverted to Tabuk today. He is admitted in a hospital in Tabuk city in northwest Saudi Arabia and receiving necessary medical attention. A full update on his health is awaited but he is reported to be in stable condition. We hope that he recovers from his injuries at the earliest. We are in touch with his family and assure them that we will continue to follow up on his health with Saudi authorities and extend all possible assistance for his wellbeing.

My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery.

Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker — preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster.

He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals.

I wish Captain Machchhar a speedy and full recovery.

He is a true hero.
