Very saddened to hear of the passing of John C. Hull, whose book Options, Futures and Other Derivative Securities was a foundational text in finance. I purchased the second edition (the first of many editions I would buy) in a mall bookstore decades ago. Liar’s Poker showed me what trading was, and Hull’s book was my first practical resource on how to do it. In today’s world of massively available educational resources it’s difficult to express how critically important the text was at the time. And still is.
🇲🇦 72-year-old Mohamed Aziz is the most photographed bookseller in the world, living in Rabat, Morocco.
Aziz, who became an orphan at the age of six, had a difficult life; he could not even finish high school because textbooks were too expensive. In 1963, at the age of 15, he started his career as a bookseller with a pile of 9 books under a tree.
Now, his bookstore sells thousands of books, and he spends his days surrounded by books, devouring the stories that emerge from them. He spends 6 to 8 hours a day reading, stopping only to eat, pray, smoke, and help his customers. All his remaining time is spent walking around neighborhoods in search of books to later display and sell in his shop.
He says this is his revenge on childhood and poverty:
“I have read more than 4,000 books in Arabic, French, English, or Spanish, which means I have lived more than 4,000 lives. Everyone should have such a chance! All I need to enjoy my day are two pillows and a book.”
@IIICapital@tadtweets Inflation is inescapable. Best bet against it is an operating business that can charge prices in pace with or above inflation and reinvest profits into growth ... S&P 500 is a cohort of the biggest and the best US business with that ability ... What m I missing here?
#Apple is now 51 percent of Berkshire Hathaway’s publically-listed #equities#portfolio. Apple is not just a fruit for #WarrenBuffett. It’s a brand that generates a lot of valuable cash, which he can re-invest and compound even further.
Back in the early 2000s, Warren Buffett was all about #Coke and American Express. He still loves coke but as he explains: “#CocaCola is a wonderful business, but it's not growing as fast as Apple”.
He has not ditched Coca-Cola – He has held on to it. But Apple has exploded off the blocks since he made his first investment.
There’s a few other things you need to know:
1️⃣ The Oracle of Omaha is a big fan of portfolio concentration and you can see this with his position in Apple.
2️⃣ Berkshire Hathaway has bought $36.3 billion worth of Apple stock since 2016, but has repurchased almost twice as much ($70 billion) in Berkshire Hathaway stock through buybacks in less than five years.
3️⃣ Buffett has turned a $36.3 billion investment into $169.3 billion – not including dividends paid – over seven years.
4️⃣ In 2022, Buffett received a total of $878.94 million in dividends from Apple. This accounted for over half of his total dividend income for the year.
