Prof. Jean-Michel Ménard and his ultrafast THz group at @uOttawa use innovative photonics tools to investigate light-matter interactions in quantum materials
Two students in our group received their PhD at the convocation last weekend. They both built the Ultrafast THz lab from the ground up.
Congratulations Dr. Wei Cui and Dr. Nicolas Couture!
Furthermore, Nicolas received the 2023 Governor General’s Gold Medal for his thesis!

We efficiently trap light inside sugar to change its properties. Does this hybrid state have a better taste than good-old sugar? Not sure... but it will certainly have many applications in polaritonic chemistry! https://t.co/4R4f3RsZ4B

Our work published in Nature Comm was featured by uOttawa media. Read it to know more about the type of projects in our lab without diving into complicated physics.🤓😎There’s also a French version!

Nice to read about Mohammad’s postdoctoral research in the Ultrafast THz lab (👨🔬💻🔧🔬🧹) and how it led him to pursue a career in high-tech industry at Agilent (💰). I really like this section of the Faculty’s annual report. 😀

We show that scientific breakthroughs can be used to lower costs & increase practicality of lab equipment. The collaboration with @OZOptics & @NRC_CNRC removes hurdles to a large-scale deployment of THz technology. https://t.co/2p6CS2jbPc

@igordownunder I'll ask them. But I'm picky with the visual quality, plus I want something practical that I can edit, and fast, because my phone is old... I think someone with a lot experience would be more efficient.
No time to waste? Use our rapid single-pulse THz system to monitor low-energy resonances in real time with a 20 µs resolution. Check out our Nature Comm: https://t.co/aYFuaqVelU. Great collaboration with Angela Gamouras and @NickJolysLab.

Using polymer, some tape (yes tape!) and a bit of metal, we fabricate a metamaterial for high-performance THz spectral filtering. This work, in collaboration with @BoydNLOLAb and @IridianSpectral, was published today in Photonics Research @OSAPublishing

Congratulations to the 2023 poster session award winners! Jacob Ewaniuk: Imperfect Quantum Photonic Neural Networks • Kate Fenwick: Photonic quantum walk with ultrafast time-bin encoding • Ahmed Jaber: Strong coupling in molecular cavity QED using THz metasurfaces
I’m officially starting today to “hold” my Visiting Chair of Instrumentation at TU Dortmund. I’m looking forward to many interactions during the next 6 months to explore new scientific ideas and establish new collaborations! 😊

It is an absolute honour to be awarded the Senior Fellowship of the University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt”. I’m looking forward to working with Profs. Lippitz and Herink on the fundamentals and applications of quantum terahertz systems.
GaP is a material used in photonic devices since 60 years. Shockingly, we couldn’t find a scalable fabrication technique to get <1 µm features. Mohammad’s recipe works great and is now published!

It was nice to discuss the key role of international scientific collaboration for the development of photonics applications with Science Counsellors of the German Embassy Dr. Klaus Shindel and Silja Fischer.
Light and beyond - the Science Counsellors of @GermanyInCanada Dr. Klaus Schindel & Silja Fischer visited the Max Planck University of Ottawa Centre for Extreme & Quantum. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece of 🇩🇪-🇨🇦 science collaboration with us!
Ilhem’s first paper since joining the group!
In collaboration with Nabila Bitri, we fabricate, characterize and deposit thin films of rGO, setting up the stage for experiments taking advantage of large size samples.

In this work, led by Jaewoo and involving an amazing team of undergrads, we wanted to see how far we can take graphene-based sensing technology and push it towards real-life applications. At the end we were flying gas sensors on a drone!
