今回は…SMUDGE、2024年アメリカツアー、初回ライブの話！

Enjiが加入しているSMUDGEというバンド。初めはただのサークルバンドでしたが、大きな変遷を経て2023年末には正式メンバーがEnji、Jimmy、Ben、Marcoの４人に決まりました。前二人が日本人、後ろ二人がアメリカ人です。そしてついに24年2月、アメリカはテキサス州のオープンマイクやライブハウスを巡ることができました。今日の写真はその初日、”タンデム”という名前のコーヒーハウスでやったステージで撮影されました。（記憶が正しければ）Laurenが撮影してくれました。彼女もまた、”Records”というバンドでベースをしています。

EnjiとJimmyが渡米した時点でBenとは半年ぶり、Marcoとは初めて会うような状態です。にもかかわらず、5日目にはこうして最初のステージを経験しました。この日は突然の大雨で外のステージは使えず、また気温も下がり客もほとんどおらず、また適当な英語でPAと会話したせいで酷いモニタリング状態でしたが、なんとか乗り切ったのを覚えています。しかし意外にも店主や対バン相手の反応はよく、自分たちがこの上なく自分たちでいられたことに案外満足していました。課題もたくさん見つかりましたが、とても良いスタートでした。

この後40日かけてテキサスを周り、最後のステージもまたこの”タンデム”という店だったのですが、この期間におけるSMUDGEの成長具合に目を見張るものがあったと、終演後興奮気味に語ってくださいました。

ちなみに、この夜の体験をJimmyが歌詞にしたのが”Start History”という楽曲です（未公開）。

@Nintendeal Companies are slowly stripping down the contracted agreement between themselves and purchasers of these games to where the publisher can just decide when a game shouldnt be played/downloaded anymore. GKCs were literally declared as not eligible for Japan’s national library.

@Nintendeal i refuse to purchase something that’s a glorified receipt code (as someone who worked at gamestop) and still takes up space on your switch. I am still on the side of legally prosecuting companies that sell digital licenses then shut down servers later that host the game download.

In 2023, as I neared the end of my college years, my music activities became more and more active. In February, after a trip to the U.S., I traveled through North Carolina and Florida, experiencing different cultures. This experience had a significant impact on my music, broadening the range of my expression. In the fall semester, I was confirmed to be repeating a year, which was a setback, but it allowed me to reaffirm my passion for music. My activities with SMUDGE intensified, and in May, I started working on an album. In August, we held a recording camp at a band member's house, and in the fall, we released our 1st single Disgusting Beauty, followed by our 2nd single Young Easy. We solidified our footing as a band and steadily moved forward. 2023 was a year where I faced my music head-on, continuing to pour my energy into my expression even through tough times.

今回は…初期SMUDGEの話！

Enjiが加入しているSMUDGEというバンド。その前身は2022年秋当時、留学生だったギタリストのBenと一緒に組んだ、いわゆる普通の部内バンドでした。僕はベースボーカル、Benがギター、そしてDaveというドラマーの３人で練習や、ライブをやっていたわけです。３人とも音楽が好きで、楽器が好きで。時に楽器をローテーションしながら、1コマ90分…時にはそれ以上、部室でジャムを続けたこともありました。

この写真は学園祭ライブの時の写真で、中央がDave、左がBenです。この時期は、Enjiの人生で最も自由な音楽を体験できた時でもありました。私生活では『Abraising Soul』の制作がずっと続いて、まさに魂を削るような制作をしていましたが……
Benと出会った私は限りなく自由で、また限りなく学生でした。
彼とバンドをするということがどれだけ大変でも、私に辞めてしまうという選択肢がないのは、この時期のスタジオ練習がどんなだったかを今だに覚えているからなのです。
