Lessons learnt in product management so far while building @Tunaresq and @Mentorlst
Your 1st goal is to represent the user, the business and the marketplace in the tech you're building. Those three should come first before you touch any code.
Your 2nd goal is to ensure the team is actually building a product aligned with the 1st goal.
Your 3rd goal is to create systems that help you achieve goal 1 & 2. This is what will determine if you'll launch a product or it will stay in your codebase.

Pitbull once said, "Ask for money and get advice. Ask for advice, get money twice."
I've been thinking about the value of mentorship for devs. Having been on both sides of the equation, I can truly say that having a mentor accelerates your learning and career progression.
I recently shot my shot online to some executive of a leading local insurance. I told her I've been thinking of making a leap into the c-suite myself someday, and if she were free I would love to buy her lunch right outside her office on Monday morning.
She isn't event a technical person, she's a CFO. We met in the CBD, and while expounding on my experience, she was very keen on a project I'd worked on with my former employer, Volvo Cars.
"You know, we've been debating on implementing such a system ourselves!" she remarked. "Insurance fraud is the biggest problem in vehicle insurance in Kenya, and we could use that telematics device!"
I tried protesting, saying I only worked on it as part of a team, but she said that I could have a month to prepare my pitch and she'd get me in front of her colleagues to present it.
Now, it's very unlikely that I'll end up designing an entire telematics system and sell it to a national insurer. But this interaction points to just how far seeking out the right mentor can take you.
Interesting bit is that the part about working together just came up naturally in our conversation, neither of us had connected the dots prior to our meeting.
But how does one go about looking for a mentor? How do you even become such a good mentee that your mentor would put their reputation on the line vouching for you?
To answer these questions, the team at Beyond Code Tuesday has turned to the founder of @Mentorlst, Frederick Ouko, to come speak about stuff like, metorship pitfalls to avoid and different types of mentorship.
He'll also speak about how he and his team have built the Mentorship platform, and what it takes to create a thriving start up from the ground up. It's essentially a story of the platform that has nurtured so many software engineers in the country.
We'll be live on Tuesday (tomorrow) from 8pm EAT (5pm GMT), as always. You can book your spot by following instructions on the comment below.
