My maternal Great-Great Grandparents, Shephard and Betsy Peek, were once enslaved by William Peek on a plantation in Crawfordville, Georgia. Our family history says that Shephard Peek was the first black man to own a cotton gin in Georgia and went on to serve in the Legislature during Reconstruction. I have searched the archives and found the Will of William Peek, Shephard is valued at $1200. I’ve seen Shepard’s signature, signed with an X. I have traced my father’s family to plantations in Virginia and Louisiana.

Even on my worst day, I know that I am a descendant of not only survivors, but thrivers. I was named Georgian of the Year not long ago and reminded that indeed, I am the hope of the slave.
