Having reviewed hundreds of Statements of Purpose (SOPs), I have noticed a common mistake.

Many applicants undersell themselves.

They write essays that mention their story but fail to clearly highlight their technical skills, research experience, leadership, and achievements, which are key factors in scholarship and admission decisions.

As a result, strong candidates often submit applications that do not fully reflect their potential.

Many applicants label themselves as competitive without clearly understanding what that actually means.

Being competitive is not about being flawless. It is about being relevant, consistent, and strategically aligned with the opportunity you are pursuing. A strong profile should be easy for the reviewer to understand, clearly showing why you are a good fit without requiring further clarification.

That difference is more important than most people realize.

There seems to be a small misunderstanding about what a recommendation letter really is.

I used to think about recommendation letters differently, too.

But after speaking with program directors and admissions committee members, I began to understand how seriously these letters are taken.

A strong recommendation letter is not casual.

It is not a favor.
It is not a checkbox.

And it is not something a lecturer should write simply because you asked.

A recommendation letter is a lecturer or professor saying:

“I know this person well enough to speak honestly about their ability, character, and potential.”

That is why it carries weight.

The recommender is putting their name, judgment, and reputation behind every sentence.

It is a professional endorsement.

I have even had professors at Johns Hopkins tell me:

“Banda, even though I know you, I don’t think I know you enough to write you a good recommendation.”

And honestly, that kind of response taught me a lot.

Because it showed me that a good professor does not write a strong letter unless they truly believe they can stand behind it.

Yeah, people will say, this is under ideal circumstances

Now, class size is real.

A typical MPH class at Johns Hopkins can have more than 250 students.

So yes, it can be hard for lecturers to know every student well.

But class size is not the only issue.

→ institutional culture matters
→ student initiative matters
→ relationship-building matters

Back in medical school, many of us did not fully understand the value of:

→ mentorship
→ faculty relationships (not the one for grades)
→ recommendation letters

That does not mean our lecturers were not teaching well.

It means many students were never really taught to think strategically about these relationships.

That is why students in Ghana, and perhaps across Africa more broadly, need to be intentional.

If you know you may need a recommendation letter one day:

→ engage early
→ ask thoughtful questions in class
→ stay after class sometimes
→ contribute when given the chance
→ do strong work that will be remembered

In a large class (typical in Ghana and across Africa), you cannot always remain anonymous and later expect a strong letter.

It may not be a perfect system.

But students still need to take initiative.

Because a strong recommendation letter is not built at the point of application.

It is built over time.

I may be writing more on this topic based on what I have learned from talking to Deans, program directors, and admission officers… stay tuned.
