Understanding Salvation - What does it mean to be saved

As a former Protestant, understanding what salvation is and how it works completely changed how I understood it when I was received into the Orthodox Church in 2020.

When we read, “the wages of sin is death,” many of us instinctively think of death as a punishment that God actively inflicts because we have sinned.

The Orthodox Church has always understood it somewhat differently.

God’s primary desire is not to punish but to heal and restore us. Sin is not merely the breaking of a rule; it is a sickness that separates us from the Source of Life. Death, corruption, and ultimately judgment are the real consequences of sin, because separation from the Giver of Life naturally leads to them. Thus, “the wages of sin is death” because sin bears the fruit of death, not because God delights in punishing His creation. His desire is always that we repent, be healed, and be restored to communion with Him.

God’s love has never been lacking. During His earthly ministry, Christ forgave sins long before He went to the Cross, showing that the Father did not need to be persuaded to become loving or merciful.

So why the Cross?

Not because the Father needed to punish the Son.

The Cross is the great victory of God over death itself. Christ entered death in order to destroy death from within, to overthrow the devil, break the power of Hades, and restore humanity’s communion with God. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are united in the one work of our salvation, not divided against one another.

This is why the Orthodox Church understands salvation not primarily in legal terms, but rather as the healing and restoration of fallen humanity, the forgiveness of sins, victory over death, and our growing union with Christ.

Our entire life becomes one of repentance, not simply feeling sorry for sin, but continually turning away from sin and back toward God. The Greek word for sin means “to miss the mark,” and the mark is Christ Himself.

Nor is this something we accomplish by our own strength. Salvation is a synergy between God’s grace and our free cooperation with Him. As St. Paul writes, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Phil 2:12-13). God supplies the grace, we freely respond to it.

Likewise, St. Peter tells us that through God’s divine power we become “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:3-4). This is what the Orthodox Church calls Theosis, not becoming God in essence, but becoming, by His grace, partakers of the divine nature. We never become God in essence; rather, by participating in His uncreated energies, we are transformed by His grace and grow ever more into His likeness.

This struggle lasts our entire lives. By God’s grace we can overcome many sins and grow in holiness, though we all continue to stumble and need repentance. Salvation is therefore not a one-time event but a lifelong journey of healing and transformation.

This has been the consistent emphasis of the Orthodox Church from the Apostles through the Church Fathers. The Fathers teach that sin brings real consequences, including death and the reality of God’s final judgment. Yet these are not understood primarily as arbitrary punishments imposed by an angry God, but as the result of humanity’s separation from the Source of Life. God’s desire has always been the salvation of all, for He “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:4). Christ came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10), not because God delights in punishment, but because He desires to restore humanity to life and communion with Himself.

So when someone asks an Orthodox Christian, “Have you been saved?” the answer is beautifully simple:

I was saved.

I am being saved.

And, by God’s grace, I hope to be saved.

That is the lifelong journey of healing and union with Christ through His Church.

Christ did not leave behind isolated individuals with private spirituality. He established a Church, gave her Apostles, sacraments, worship, doctrine, discipline, bishops, and a communal life.

It is impossible to take Christianity seriously while saying, “I believe in God, but I don’t need religion or the Church.”

That idea is largely a modern form of individualism: me, Jesus, my Bible

Christ did not establish Christianity that way.

He said, “I will build My Church” (Matt 16:18), not “I will leave behind millions of independent believers to construct Christianity for themselves.”

After Pentecost, Christians “continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). That is already recognisably the life of the Church: Apostolic teaching, communal worship, the Eucharist, and prayer.

St Paul calls the Church “the household of God… the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Tim 3:15), and Christians are explicitly warned not to abandon assembling together (Heb 10:25).

Even Scripture does not use the word religion as though religion itself were something bad:

“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this…” James 1:27

The issue is therefore not religion versus God. It is true worship versus false worship, and authentic communion with God versus man inventing God on his own terms.

The earliest Christians understood this perfectly.

St Ignatius of Antioch, an actual disciple of the Apostles, wrote around 107ad:

“Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude also be, even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” - (Source: Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 8)

And St Cyprian of Carthage later expressed the same Apostolic understanding:

“He cannot have God for his Father who has not the Church for his mother.” - (Source: On the Unity of the Church, 6)

Christianity was never designed as a private spirituality detached from the visible Church.

Christ founded a Church. The Apostles governed that Church. They ordained bishops and presbyters. Christians gathered for worship and the Eucharist.
They received and preserved Apostolic teaching.

So the question really is: “Can I follow the Christianity of Christ and the Apostles while rejecting the Church and religion altogether?”

The New Testament itself answers it: No

I do not skip carbohydrate because it makes me fat. Plenty of people eat it and stay lean. I am not an addict white knuckling it, and a bread roll does not put me in hospital.

I skip it because of what stopped when I did.

- Fog in the morning, fog again in the afternoon.
- Reading the same paragraph over and over.
- Bloating after ordinary meals.
- Hunger arriving long before it should.
- Snacking that was never really a decision.
- Broken, unrefreshing sleep.
- Skin that flared and settled and flared again.
- Anxiety that ran from waking to bed.

Not one of those shows up on a blood test. Not one of them gets you anything in a seven minute appointment beyond a shrug and the word stress.

And I have given carbohydrate every fair chance since. Weekend cycling. Carbs in the evening. Carbs around training. Two weeks abroad eating whatever was in front of me. Some of that brought back a few off the list, some of it did not.

What none of it ever did was make me sleep better, lift heavier, or look better. Not once. They were not worth the space on the plate.

There is no essential carbohydrate. There is no essential vegetable. Nine amino acids and two fatty acids on the list of things a human has to eat, and beef and butter carry every one of them.

Six years, and the cortisol catastrophe I keep getting warned about in the replies has still not turned up to collect.

So I am putting my faith in the meat. It is the only thing on the plate that has never once cost me an afternoon.
