We Cannot Abandon Our Afghan Allies

At Paws Unite People (PUP), our mission has always been to support animals & the compassionate individuals who care for them. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Afghan rescue workers who risked their lives to protect animals in war-torn Afghanistan. These individuals not only cared for stray & abandoned animals but also supported the U.S. & NATO forces by caring for military working dogs & the personal pets of service members, NGO & government employees.

When the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, our Afghan partners made an extraordinary sacrifice. Instead of prioritizing their own escape, they stayed behind to rescue abandoned contract working dogs & the pets of the U.S. & NATO personnel. Amid the chaos, they risked their lives to ensure these animals were safe & could be reunited with their owners. Their courage & dedication reflect the highest standards of service & commitment.

Today, while the animals they saved have found safety, the individuals who made these rescues possible remain in grave danger.

Despite assurances of a pathway to safety through the U.S. Refugee Admissions P1/P2 Program, UNHCR registrations, & the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) process, these individuals remain in limbo in Pakistan. Having undergone extensive vetting—including background checks & security clearances by multiple U.S. agencies—they continue to face bureaucratic delays & shifting policies that have left them stranded.

Most recently, a broad executive order—originally issued by President Trump—has further jeopardized their future by suspending refugee admissions. Just as many of our Afghan partners were finally cleared for relocation, this abrupt policy change halted their progress, eliminating their chance for a secure future. These individuals, who once stood beside U.S. service members in Afghanistan, are now left abandoned in increasingly precarious conditions.

The Pakistani government’s recent crackdown on Afghan refugees has only worsened their plight, leaving many at risk of deportation to Taliban-controlled areas where they face persecution & potential death. The suspension of the Welcome Corps program, which allowed private citizens to sponsor vetted Afghan refugees, has further diminished their options. This initiative provided a crucial avenue for Americans to support their Afghan allies directly, but its suspension has left those willing to help without recourse.

For PUP, this crisis is deeply personal. These individuals are not mere statistics; they are our friends, colleagues, & partners. They stood by us & our service members when it mattered most. Now, it is our responsibility to stand by them. Failing to do so is not just a lapse in policy—it is a profound moral failure.

To understand why they were left behind, one must consider the chaotic nature of the withdrawal. Those who trusted the system, followed the rules, & waited for their turn were overlooked in the frenzied rush for evacuation. Now, more than two years later, they are still waiting—still believing that the U.S. will honor its commitment.

We cannot allow this injustice to persist. The U.S. made a promise to our Afghan allies, & we must uphold it. 1,000 days have passed since the Taliban banned girls from school, depriving Afghan girls and women of a basic human right.

We will not stop reminding the world of the plight of Afghan Women and Girls.

Education for girls has ended.

Afghan women are barred from public spaces, including parks, and most forms of employment.

Our group we are assisting waiting in Pakistan for US case processing is predominantly women and children.

While they sit in Pak waiting on US processing (for years now), they can't go to school or work in their former careers either... but they are at least not forced to wear a burqua or into a marriage they don't want... or being stoned because they are divorced and fled an abusive spouse.

We are doing our best to provide the kids with education online while they wait. My volunteers are amazing and been helping with English classes, and I love them for it.

If anyone thinks we should not be helping our colleagues in animal welfare stay safe, you are just as misogynistic and evil as the Talib.

As a woman led org, we will stand by our colleagues who want to live in a world where women are appreciated, not abused and hidden away.

We vowed not to leave our Allies behind, but they are left to the wolves while we all argue about meaningless things. Instead of arguing, we need to #finishthemission and not let these brace people be erased and forgotten.

As a woman... I will continue to advocate for the women and girls that are being erased from existence. I wish more women were.

As a human being, I will continue to advocate for the SIV and P1/P2 cases waiting to be processed so they can LEGALLY come to the USA.

They are us.
We are them.
