A lovely interview…available on YouTube, it is well worth watching in its entirety. Tuba was wonderfully candid and completely transparent, and avoided expanding on only a single question! Tuba was remarkably honest, offering long, thoughtful, and serious answers. She moved effortlessly between deep, philosophical reflections and lighthearted moments, making the conversation feel incredibly grounded.

Highlights:

Tuba shared that raising her children is her life. Because of this, she doesn’t see it as choosing between her children and her work; rather, her choices are between life and work, even if that means making less money in the process.

Opening up about the difficult period surrounding her divorce…the most difficult five years of her life…Tuba noted that she was acutely aware of how her choices as a single parent would affect her girls in the future, believing that daughters learn how to navigate the world from their mothers.

Emphasizing the importance of family, Tuba highlighted how much her parents have supported her as a single mother. (She’s never had outside help). As an example, she shared that her father recently traveled to Paris to stay with the twins and her mother had accompanied her on a long international trip.

Tuba admitted that when she looks in the mirror, she doesn't perceive herself as beautiful. She reflected on growing up as an only child who was incredibly shy and, at times, found it difficult to fit in.

Discussing the significance of hair and its cultural perceptions, Tuba shared her belief that hair absorbs the surrounding energy. However, she noted that she didn’t attach great importance to her decision to cut her hair short.

While she didn't discuss her specific acting projects, the host, Emel, asked about the unfortunate "armpit" controversy surrounding an AI-generated photo of her character, Meral, from Sultana. Tuba used the moment to reflect on a broader truth: on social media, everyone is constantly subjected to relentless judgment and scrutiny. But Tuba admitted it was very hurtful and took away from the work put into the project.

Tuba discussed how damaging, dismissive, and harmful statements regarding women are frequently perpetuated by other women, rather than just men. She used the classic "mother-in-law" dynamic as a prime example of women continuing to conflict with one another within patriarchal norms.

Tuba spoke passionately about her ongoing work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, particularly her visits to refugee camps.

In her most philosophical moments Tuba expanded on the evolution of the soul. She believes growth is not experienced in a linear line but rather as a spiral.

Tuba emphasized that the reality of her everyday life is vastly different from the glamour of red-carpet events. She is entirely down-to-earth—not above pulling out a needle and thread to mend her own hem before an important occasion. Whether she is walking the red carpet or stepping into a private room to return a piece of priceless borrowed jewelry, she remains exactly who she is: grounded, constant, and always true to herself.

Tuba talked about her aversion to wearing a watch on her wrist stating, “the watch is constantly ticking, ticking, ticking, whatever it is, you have veins on your arm, and I thought that kind of vibration wasn't right. Okay this did remind me of Engin’s most recent short story, “Tik Tak, Tik Tak”😅

Finally, I included the one part of the video where Tuba wouldn't expound on her answer. Whatever it was, it sounded wonderful. Emel remarked that it sounded like "you stole a fingerful of honey." I agree. Her face was transformed. And Tuba’s hummingbird necklace was in plain sight. 😌
