क्या तीसरे लिफ़ाफ़े को खोलने का वक़्त आ गया है?
तीन लिफाफों की कहानी:
मैनेजमेंट स्कूल्स में एक Three Envlopes Story काफी प्रचलित है.
एक सीईओ जब कंपनी छोड़ रहा था तो उसने नये सीईओ को तीन लिफाफे दिये और कहा जब संकट आए तो इन्हें बारी बारी से खोलना.
तीन महीने में सेल्स गिर गई, सीईओ की आलोचना होने लगी तब उसे पिछले सीईओ के लिफाफों की याद आई. उसने दराज से पहला लिफाफा निकाल कर खोला. अंदर एक लाइन लिखी थी "सारा दोष मुझ पर डाल दो".
उसने तुरंत प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस बुलाई और कहा सेल्स गिरने की वजह पिछला सीईओ था. सब बिगाड़ कर गया है – हम उसे ठीक कर रहे हैं.
सब मान गये और आलोचना बंद हो गई.
लेकिन घाटा कम नहीं हुआ और कुछ महीने में फिर आलोचना होने लगी. उसने फिर दराज खोली और दूसरा लिफ़ाफ़ा खोला. उस पर लिखा था Reorganise यानी बदलाव करो. उसने कुछ को हटाया, योजनाओं के नाम बदले. कुछ समय के लिए फिर लोग शांत हो गए और कंपनी के घाटे के बारे में सवाल पूछना बंद कर दिया.
लेकिन अगले क्वार्टर तक घाटा और बढ़ गया, चारों तरफ आलोचना बढ़ गई, इस्तीफे की बाते होने लगीं.
पिछले दो बार के तजुर्बों को देखकर उसने तीसरा लिफाफा खोला.
इस बार उसमें लिखा था अब आप तीन लिफाफे बनाइए.

In the late 1920s, she was in Germany pursuing her doctoral degree in Anthropology at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute under the prominent academic Eugen Fischer. Fischer was driven by a mission to prove that racial inferiority was biologically determined, operating on a strict hypothesis of Aryan superiority.
​Risking her academic career as a scholar under such a man, she directly contradicted Fischer’s theories. She presented her own research findings that there was no biological basis for racial superiority, least of all tied to skull size. Unsurprisingly, Fischer gave her the lowest possible grade yet she stood resolutely by her scientific integrity.
​Her name was Irawati Karve, India’s first female anthropologist and a true trailblazer who rejected age old customs and gender inequality.
Born in 1905 in Burma, her name was inspired by the Irrawaddy River.
​Throughout her life, she consistently challenged dogmatism. Her celebrated book 𝘠𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢, a critical study of the Mahabharata, won the Sahitya Akademi Award, even as it drew the wrath of orthodox sections of society.
​In one of her papers, she offered a profound critique of religious intolerance -
​"Many Hindus dream that if the government were wiser, it could rid India both of Muslims and Christians so that one has an entirely Hindu India. It is foolish to think one can establish uniformity and keep it as such through ages. Without the Muslims and Christians, there were bitter wars between Buddhists and non-Buddhists, between Jains and Hindus in the South and between Shaivas and Vaishnavas. The rational humanitarian’s aim cannot be the establishment of one religion but to bring about conditions by which people of different cultures can live together in mutual understanding and respect."
​On August 11, 1970, Irawati Karve passed away. Her fierce courage, intellectual honesty, and invaluable contributions deserve to be remembered and celebrated.

❌ Even Tier-1 firms may eventually face pressure.
❌ Audit assignments → ↓
❌ Professional opportunities → ↓
❌ Fee pressure → ↑

Big 4 / large firms may absorb the shock.
But the real impact could fall on the thousands of small & mid-sized CA firms across India.

Audit is not merely a compliance cost.
It is a pillar of financial transparency, accountability and stakeholder confidence.

On behalf of the Government and the people of Karnataka, I warmly congratulate Professor Deepak Dhar, INSA Distinguished Professor at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR) in Bengaluru, who has been awarded the 2026 ICTP Dirac Medal. Awarded annually by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the Dirac Medal is one of the world’s most prestigious honours in theoretical physics. Professor Dhar shares this year’s honour with Bernard Derrida, Marc Mézard and Haim Sompolinsky, in recognition of “their pioneering contributions to equilibrium statistical mechanics and for extending its concepts and methods into non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, optimization problems, theoretical neuroscience, and, finally, artificial intelligence.”

I am delighted to note that Professor Dhar is the second Indian to receive the Dirac Medal, after Professor Ashoke Sen, who was awarded the Medal in 2014. Professor Sen is ICTS-Infosys Madhava Chair Professor at ICTS.

This makes Bengaluru the home of both of India’s Dirac Medallists!

ICTS, a centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, is a leading global hub for research in the theoretical sciences and a vibrant meeting point for the global scientific community. Its world-class research is complemented by a rich calendar of programs and discussion meetings. Every day, ICTS is helping strengthen India’s place on the global scientific map while nurturing a wider appreciation of science in society.

The Government of Karnataka has supported the establishment and further expansion of ICTS for a mathematical and physical sciences cluster. This is part of our plan for India’s first Quantum City, adjacent to ICTS at Hesaraghatta.
