I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Abdirizak Karod. Abdirizak was a pillar in Ottawa’s Somali and Muslim community for decades. He was a respected community leader who dedicated his life to helping newcomers and refugees build safe, welcoming, and hopeful lives in Ottawa. I admired his leadership, how he supported youth, and helped thousands of people find belonging in our city. His work changed lives.

On behalf of the City of Ottawa, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife Sahra, his children Ayan, Mohamud, Hakim, and Lukman, and to all his family, friends, colleagues, and the many community members who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service and compassion will continue to be felt across our city for years to come.

C'est avec une profonde tristesse que j'ai appris le décès d'Abdirizak Karod. Abdirizak a été pendant des décennies un pilier de la communauté somalienne et musulmane d'Ottawa. C'était un leader communautaire respecté qui a consacré sa vie à aider les nouveaux arrivants et les réfugiés à se construire une vie sécuritaire, accueillante et pleine d'espoir à Ottawa. J'admirais son leadership, la façon dont il soutenait les jeunes et aidait des milliers de personnes à trouver leur place dans notre ville. Son travail a changé des vies.

Tomorrow, I will have the honour of testifying before Parliament of Canada 🇨🇦on an issue of growing national concern. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee is undertaking a study on the abuse and financial vulnerability of senior women.

The urgency is clear financial abuse is the most common form of elder abuse in Canada, and in 2024 alone, fraud reports to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre exceeded $638 million in losses. Senior women are especially vulnerable at the intersection of economic insecurity, abuse, and fraud. National data shows that women make up the majority of senior victims of family violence, while 7.2% of senior women have reported emotional or financial scam, abuse

This study is an important opportunity to examine federal income supports, scams targeting seniors, and the federally funded measures required to protect the safety, financial security, and dignity of older women in Canada.

This is about fair access to jobs, leadership in federally regulated sectors, and economic opportunity especially for Black women.
