I am who I am, not who you want me to be. I am what I want to be, and no, you can't change me. I will be who I want, so just respect that. and love me for me.
Today, ministers repeatedly told the public not to exchange USD above the MMA-set rate of MVR 15.42. They reminded everyone that doing otherwise is illegal and urged people to stop anyone engaging in it.
But here’s the problem.
When you buy something online, BML gives you USD at MVR 15.42 but adds around a 30% commission. In practical terms, you are paying roughly MVR 20 for $1
When BML buys USD, it offer 25% “profit” on top of MVR 15.42. In practical terms, that is around MVR 19 for $1
So the Government apparently believes it can allow BML to effectively buy and sell dollars at rates approaching the parallel-market rate, while lecturing everyone else that they must stick to MVR 15.42
Maldivians are not that stupid. ( or are we? )
If MVR 15.42 is the legal rate, apply the principle equally to everyone, including BML.
If not then the Government isn’t really trying to eliminate the USD black market. It just wants its partner, BML, to be the only one allowed to operate at black-market.
Rule of law is not about how many rules you make. It is about following those rules even when you are the Government.
Perhaps someone should start a petition call on Parliament to investigate MMA & BML and to stop applying one rule to BML and another to everyone else.
Country managed dollar shortage just fine during covid when we had no U$D income. Today with more resort, more guest houses and more tax some how @MMuizzu can't manage.
I'm not sure if it's due to a lack of training, low salaries, or a combination of both. But from hospitals to ferry ticket counters, from government offices to airport check in counters , you rarely see staff offering service with even basic courtesy. Many act rude, as if they’re being forced to do their job.
We can't expect proper service in local places like hospitals and ticket counters, because the people behind the counters behave like they're doing us a favor. Honestly, if it weren't for the well trained resort reps who actually take care of tourists and provide real hospitality, the Maldives would rank embarrassingly low in service quality.
If a Maldivian who lives abroad is eligible to get 750 USD through BML at rasmee bank rate, the same privilege should be accorded to Maldivians living in the country.
There should be no discrimination.
We take pride in saying that we provide insurance cover in the country of residence to any Maldivian national. Perhaps, the only country in the world.
A person who chooses to live abroad does so because they have the luxury to do it. The government should not be under an obligation to provide them financial resources beyond what we can afford.
All Maldivians should be able to avail of 750 US Dollars per month from BML.
The 30% fee is a very poor implementation of austerity measures.
Yes our nation needs to stop leakage of USD but this is not the way to do it. So many private resorts still cause dollar leakage.
The 30% fee now makes it more appealing for a consumer who wishes to spend on one of listed websites to buy their USD in the parallel market.
Very poor fiscal planning and implementation. Also imposing the fee on a select list of websites when most of them have big competitors that consumers can resort to, is nearing antitrust violations.
How has the bank come to the conclusion majority are business transactions?
Our banking sector is pathetic.

Nasser Medical Complex in Gaza:
Only 48 hours separate us from a real humanitarian catastrophe. Hundreds of premature infants and babies in the incubators at Nasser Hospital are threatened with death due to the shortage of their essential milk, as milk is not available in the hospital, nor in the markets, nor with institutions.

We set the tone for violence against women when the Supreme Court admitted that Nazaha was a battered woman but still upheld her sentence. And our Presidents would rather pardon alleged pedophiles than her
