Pulitzer Prize winning author @nhannahjones on conservatives who say Harvard President Claudine Gay only kept her job because she's Black.
“It's racist. It defies logic. And the fact that of those presidents, who all came under intense scrutiny, that only one has been called out as a so-called diversity or affirmative action hire, just speaks to what Black women in this country have gone through historically and continue to go through every day”
Of course, if @OED wishes to be relevant to the global human rights movement, this and all other anti-Black racist lexical entries will be removed from the dictionary (ideally) or critically annotated (at the very least).
@OED: I was just looking up "antiphrasis" when I came upon your example of a 16th century usage: "1589 G. Puttenham Arte Eng. Poesie iii. xviii. 159 Antiphrasis, or the Broad floute..as..to [say to] a Negro..in good sooth ye are a faire one."
This example should not be used. I am certain that there are other examples that would prove progressive rather than regressive and racist. And if @OED wrongly insists upon using it, it should provide contextualization that makes clear the pejorative nature of such phrasing.
Hey @Jeopardy: Freedom's Journal was the first African American newspaper, founded in 1827. It preceded your cited New Orleans "Daily Creole" by nearly 30 years!
Durhamites, restaurants need your support more than ever. When temperatures dropped and students went home, sales plummeted for everyone. We are asking for you to pledge to order takeout food from any INDEPENDENT restaurant 1-2X per week please. #DurhamTakeoutPledge
@AFASWashU I'm so sad to hear this! Garrett started as star postdoc @AFASWashU back when I was a graduate assistant in the program. He was consistently intellectually sharp and always a kind and warm soul, a model of collegiality and human being. Godspeed.
@tmagazine One of the florists you feature, LACHAUME, prominently sells blackface ceramic vases and objets d'art that revive 19th c orientalist fantasies. @nytimes's uncritical (unintentional?) lauding of this sort of business normalizes anti-muslim, anti-black hegemonies.
@nbcsvu: Just watching the episode "Hell" on USA, and realized that in none of your VIP promos do you mention that the phenomenal actress Cicely Tyson guest starred on SVU. Bears correction, no???
A whole lot of uninformed people gonna be spouting that take that Jessica Krug proves Black people have advantages, when all it exposes is what we’ve always known — lighter and fairer-skinned black folks are more valued because of their proximity to whiteness.
The lawsuit was led by @NAACP, public school parents and school districts across the country and aimed to protect critical COVID-19 aid for public schools & their students
