#OnThisDay last year, Benson reached its highest temperature on record of 38.7C 🌡️. Today was much cooler in comparison, with a maximum temperature of 21.8C. Cloud will fade overnight, allowing temperatures to drop to a minimum of 8C under clear skies ☁️🌒. ^SJ

Wintry showers with spells of sunshine - strong north-westerly winds bring cooler polar maritime air to the UK. Occasionally updrafts lift rain back into clouds where it freezes into hail.

Why? In air below 2°C, water vapour in clouds condenses directly into ice crystals, which grow into snow crystals and fall. Above 0°C, snowflakes melt around the edges and stick together to become larger

Why? The third named storm of the season, Ciara, developed as a low-pressure system over the Atlantic earlier this week & was propelled towards the UK by a very strong jet stream

Weather: Lots of fog that will be slow to clear
Why? Low temperatures overnight cool air, so temperature falls to dew point temperature, forming fog. Light winds will allow for air near the surface to remain near saturation.

Weather/why? : Mild with cloud and rain linked to an area of low pressure over Iceland. Later on in the day a squall line’ (line of storms ahead of a cold front) will move eastwards, bringing heavy rain and gales

Why? : Dust and small particles are trapped in the atmosphere by a high pressure system that has moved eastwards, scattering blue light and leaving red light
