Onam as you know it is not some unbroken 3,000 year old rite. It is a modern, syncretic creation, and everyone in Kerala helped build it.

Start with what women wear to it. The blouse under every kasavu saree owes its universal adoption to missionary schools and the Channar revolt. Decades of struggle over whether lower caste women were even permitted to cover their chests, conceded only in 1859, and conceded grudgingly, on the condition that they not dress like their betters. So the "traditional" Onam outfit is partly a monument to that fight. Traditional since 1859, if we are counting. Same goes with the men wearing stitched buttoned shirts.

Then look at the leaf you call timeless has been absorbing new arrivals for centuries. Every chilli in that meal comes from a plant the Portuguese brought after 1498. Pumpkin in the erissery, potatoes and tomato in the sambar, all American. Beetroot in the pachadi and cabbage in the thoran came with Europeans, grown in the high ranges on the back of colonial hill agriculture. And almost all of Kerala now eats Onasadya at a table, on a chair, whether at home or hotel!

And the sadya was, for most of our history, a privilege of caste and land. My mother remembers her family being among the very few in the village who could put one on, while others came to the gate asking for rice. The ordinary Malayali, Shudra and Avarna, the vast majority, ate kappa, aka Tapioca. The Portuguese crop that carried Kerala through the famines of the 1940s.

In short, the Onam that Hindoos are romanticising as exclusive to them is actually a result of the very forces you resent. Missionary schooling. Social reform. Land reform. New World crops. It became everyone's festival because Kerala became a place where everyone could afford to celebrate.
