“She lay in a dark corner of the shed – a sleek keel-less hull, shored up on high chocks, dusty and forlorn.”
So starts John Reeve-Fowkes’ “Six Metre Saga” written in 1991. Read the rest here 👉👉 https://t.co/7reclvgVGh
Here she is! This is Melita, sailing in Germany c. 1910 with her gaff rig. The last we heard she was still in Germany sailing on Lake Constance. Can anyone send us some more up to date information?
Did you know we have rating certificates in the archive? This is our earliest example, dating from 1910 and belonging to Melita.
Stick with us and we’ll show you a photo in a few days of Melita when she was first built.
Give us a #follow to make sure you don't miss it!
As those of us in the north head towards winter, we thought you might like this picture of the Long Beach Midwinter Regatta held in 1971. US43 Sprig can be seen in the foreground.
Who else looks forward to winter sailing? 🥶⛵️❄️

This photo of #SixMetres racing in the 1920s prompted an unplanned research project. We recognised most of the boats, but where had H2 come from??
Our archivist explains how this image led to us finding three previously unlisted Sixes. https://t.co/UPXVRKusOc
The #SixMetre archive website has hundreds of records for you to use, including a growing number of plans.
This 1921 sail plan of Hypnos was added earlier this month. She was one of 11 Sixes designed by Nygren between 1911 and 1924.

Meet @kyria6mr! Currently undergoing a painstaking restoration, the 1947 #SixMetre has been owned by the same family for decades.
We love this 1982 pic; the 10 yr old boy sitting with his granddad at the helm is now her owner. Give him a follow to keep up with progress!
We are always adding new material to our website, so it's worth checking back every so often for new records.
This fabulous photo of Carmela dating from the mid-1920s was added to the site earlier this month. Visit https://t.co/4iJKhExMYV for more info!
#OTD in 1908, Sir Thomas Glen Coats wrote to the Royal Northern Yacht Club.
The result of this letter, and those of Mr George Moir, was the "establishment of a 6 Metre Yacht Class upon the Clyde" as suggested by Moir.
And the rest is... well the rest is on the ISMA Archive!
#OTD in 1865 Axel Nygren was born in Karlstad, Sweden. He designed at least 11 Six Metres, including Sass (pictured) which raced at the 1912 Olympics. Nygren died four days after his 70th birthday on 20th October 1935.
We love a bit of drama when it comes to sailing, and this incredible photo certainly delivers! Sadly we have no idea who took this dramatic photo of Ingomar (Hoyt, 1923). Does anyone out there know any more?
You can see the picture on the website here: https://t.co/Tgrr0HXtUI
“...the enthusiasm I found permeating continental yachtsmen for this 6 Metre Class ... has imbued me with the desire to extend to our Scottish waters the international character which is already engendered for the sport in this class of boat.” 1908.

30 years ago in 1991 the @RTYC1775 newsletter wrote a lighthearted report on the #SixMetre World Championships held in Torbay that September. Visit https://t.co/UylgKbnSzQ to read about a stolen and subsequently sunk windward mark, a woman with a broken leg and a boat on fire! 😯
This grainy image was printed #OTD in 1924 in the Washington Sunday Star. The caption says “England wins the first of the six-meter races off Oyster Bay, L.I. The British Boat Betty “walked away” from the others in the first international heat.”

It's the 2nd day of racing in the #6mreuropeanchampionships2021 in Sanxeno and eagle eyes are on the fleet.
Who to look out for in the Open division? Keep an eye on Nivola. Built in 1984, Nivola won the 2018 Europeans. Will she be able to keep her title? We’ll find out soon!
