Plenty of Amharas are helping to organize the upcoming elections in Ethiopia, and many Amharas will be on the ballot, representing either the ruling party or one of several opposition parties. But Senait Senay and her likes from the Amhara supremacist militia Fano have no patience for building a democracy, let alone trying to compete in it. They are reporting these "Amhara protests" against the elections, though this is actually amusing, because it's so amateurishly fake. What is no joke is their declared intention to sabotage the election by killing left and right.

Yes, the international community is taking note.

H.E. Semereta Sewasew, Ethiopia's State Minister of Finance for Economic Cooperation, recently held high-level talks with Eric Meyer, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Africa and the Middle East. The meeting took place on April 2, 2026, in Addis Ababa, where Semereta led a senior technical delegation from Ethiopia's Ministry of Finance, while Meyer headed the American side. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral economic cooperation through Ethiopia’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms, including debt sustainability, fiscal management, tax policy improvements, and better domestic revenue mobilization to ensure stable inflation.

The talks also covered the implementation of Ethiopia’s National Medium-Term Revenue Strategy, which emphasizes integrating tax policy and administration with digital systems. Additional topics included global energy developments and their effects on fuel markets, transportation, and public services, as well as U.S. support for essential imports like fertilizer and medicines. Semereta Sewasew highlighted the positive results from the government’s reform measures and the importance of continued institutional strengthening for long-term development. The institutions entrusted with our peace and security are more than protectors of order; they are the shield of our peace and the vigilant guardians of our national dignity and interests.

Today, we gathered at the National Security Conference under the theme, “Coordination of Security and Law Enforcement Institutions to ensure National Peace and Security.” It was not merely a meeting, but a reaffirmation of our shared responsibility to safeguard the future of our nation.

Ethiopia stands at a defining crossroads. On one side lie immense opportunities and hard-earned victories; on the other, real and pressing challenges. We have faced internal conflicts, terrorist threats, instability in the Middle East, and shifting geopolitical tides. And yet, Ethiopia has not faltered. It has stood firm resilient, determined, unbroken.

It continues to shine as a beacon of hope for Africa. And that light is sustained by the strength of our security institutions and by the extraordinary sacrifices of its sons and daughters.

In recent years, reform has not only strengthened our institutions, it has transformed them. Challenges have been met with resolve and turned into opportunities. The relative peace we experience today did not come easily. It was secured by modern, capable, and disciplined forces strengthened by technology, empowered by skill, and unified by purpose working day and night, side by side with the Ethiopian people.

This hard-won peace is not an endpoint; it is a foundation. A foundation upon which we are building economic progress, advancing national projects, and shaping a more prosperous future.

Today, our diplomatic and strategic efforts to defend Ethiopia’s national interests have entered a new chapter. But success in this new era demands more coordination, more unity, more shared purpose. Federal, regional, and local institutions must act not in isolation, but in concert, aligned in mission and execution.

The progress we are witnessing in Oromia and Amhara gives us reason for hope. Yet we know that our work is not complete. Until sustainable peace is secured in every corner of our country, we must press forward with greater determination, deeper coordination, and unwavering resolve.

I have full confidence in our security institutions. I believe they will rise to this moment, fulfill their duties with integrity, and ensure that the 7th General Election, to be held at the end of next May, stands as a historic milestone in the strengthening of Ethiopia’s democracy.

Freed from the burdens of the past, and undeterred by the trials of the present, we move forward with clarity, with courage, and with conviction to build a nation worthy of the next generation.

It is a great pleasure to join the inaugural flight of Air Algérie to Ethiopia, following the signing of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between our two countries last year.

Despite longstanding, strong strategic political and diplomatic relations, the absence of direct air connectivity between our capitals has limited the full realization of economic cooperation between Algeria and Ethiopia. Today’s inaugural flight represents a pivotal milestone in bridging that gap and advancing our shared ambitions—particularly in trade, investment, and broader economic engagement.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the highest authorities of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria for their commitment and support in launching this important route, connecting Addis Ababa—the heartbeat of Africa—with Algiers, the shining star of the Mediterranean.
