In my opinion this is the beginning of a seismic shift. Since October 2024 key postings were in stasis.

This 4 star position leaves CGS arguably the most important post after Field Marshall empty. All eyes will be on who fills it. And that’s natural. From here it’s natural to wonder, about other Army positions that loom large and have mindshare with stakeholders, across the agencies. But then you’ll miss the bigger picture.

The Field Marshall has shown numerous times he does not let circumstances or events force his hand. I believe he kept Islamabad paused for 21 months for a reason. I believe he built and validated a plan. And at a time of his choosing he is executing it.

When you are an aspirant to Chief of Army Staff the world is different. You’re powerful. At the height of your capabilities. Going for the biggest position in the land. Once you become Chief of Army Staff the whole country is suddenly naked. There’s nowhere to hide. And you realise it’s all about survival. The nation’s survival.

If you believe that a man who is amongst the deepest thinkers we’ve ever had in this position, has for over 3 years seen Pakistan’s flaws from the top of the mountain, is just going to do business as usual, then you don’t know how he thinks.

A lot of high potential brigadiers were made 2 stars a couple of weeks ago. Yes we will now get crucial 3 star postings. But that is the anvil. The hammer will be an accountability and action matrix created by bringing Army efficiency into key areas of governance. It will be a combination of human resource and processes to allow us to do one thing the private sector and Chinese have been screaming for…. Simply getting things done.

Knowing what I know of the man, and knowing what he knows about how Pakistan works, I refuse to believe he’ll settle for business as usual.

I think we’re about to have the best 3 years for this country in a long long time.
