Congressman Jeff Van Drew on Delaney Hall, where detainees are paid $1/day or less for their work and are on hunger strike: "This is better treatment than people generally receive... the conditions are better than 90% of the world lives in, and probably half of America."
I honestly don't know how rich people end up committing crimes. If I had just $500K, I would live so peacefully, mind my own business, take walks, wear my little outfits, read books, and just feed birds.
🚨BREAKING: ICE agents were filmed shoving U.S. citizens into a MOVING TRUCK during protests outside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention facility… while one protester’s foot looks to be run over by the vehicle.
These are Americans standing in solidarity with detainees… who are currently on a hunger and labor strike… over reports of abuse, medical neglect, inedible food, overcrowding, and retaliation inside the facility.
A woman reportedly miscarried while detained, and was denied proper medical treatment.
Families and advocates have reported detainees being beaten and pepper sprayed.
Lawmakers attempting oversight have been blocked from access.
And now women involved in the strike are reportedly being transferred out of state, to Louisiana, as of this morning…
A move Rep. Rob Menendez believes is retaliation for demanding basic human decency.
And when Americans show up to protest it… ICE agents responded with extreme violence. (Now imagine what they are doing IN the facility, without cameras everywhere.)
So, it’s time to stop pretending this is “normal immigration enforcement.”
You do not build detention systems, like this, unless cruelty is the point.
You do not transfer hunger strikers across the country, to a facility known for quick deportations, unless intimidation is the point.
You do not attack protesters and block oversight unless you know the public would be horrified by what’s happening inside.
And the government is doing this openly now… because they no longer believe there will be consequences.
💢 New Jersey State Police have taken control of the perimeter outside the GEO Group-run Delaney Hall ICE detention center in Newark, following an executive order by Governor Mikie Sherrill aimed at de-escalating more than a week of volatile clashes between ICE agents and demonstrators protesting conditions inside the facility.
The protests were sparked by a hunger strike involving 300-400 detainees who allege inhumane treatment. New Jersey State Police established designated “peaceful assembly zones” using more than 600 yards of barricades to separate protesters from the detention center. Under the agreement, federal ICE agents pulled back from the immediate perimeter.
🎥 Despite the transition, tensions remained high into Friday night. State troopers used tear gas, pepper spray, and mounted units to push back crowds. Drop Site contributors A.B. Youssef (@t_p_i_p) and Jude Finkelberg (@judesies) documented the scenes and spoke with demonstrators outside the facility.
🚨 Israel Burns More Palestinians Alive Under U.S.-Backed Ceasefire
Palestinians carried burned and wounded children through the streets after an Israeli airstrike hit a residential home in central Gaza City, killing at least 7 people, including two young girls, and wounding more than 20 others, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.
Videos filmed by journalists Omar Al-Gedi and Mahmoud Shaweesh capture residents pulling casualties from the rubble, children covered in blood being rushed into ambulances, and crowds screaming in panic as flames and smoke filled the area.
Israel continues to carry out daily strikes on homes and residential neighborhoods across Gaza and Lebanon despite ongoing U.S.-backed ceasefire agreements, while mediating parties in the Gaza talks — the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey — remain largely silent about blatant ceasefire violations. Over 920 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel agreed to a ceasefire last October.
Eid Mubarak!
Today as we honor Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden. It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most.
I am honored to be New York City's first Muslim Mayor and I am determined to lead through solidarity. Together, we are working to ensure every New Yorker can afford the groceries, housing, and child care they need.
Our solidarity is our strength. Eid Saeed, New York.
