Four years ago today, Freya the wandering Walrus arrived here in Shetland for a four week stay. 248 days later, she was MURDERED by the Directorate of Fisheries in Norway as she was perceived to be a "continued threat to human safety". Abhorrent and unforgivable on every level.
Today is the day after the day that I, Andrew Street, the Head Forester of Hollybank Woods was given less than 24 hour notification that intrusive bat surveying had been granted to a commercial company to enter and interfere with out Bechstien’s Bats. I strongly object to this.
Sitting outside Cartgate Café on the 303, Somerset, I heard a Mistle Thrush alarming, it was chasing a Magpie, i guessed there was a nest close by.
In the middle of this pic you can see its partner sitting in their nest, surprisingly the nest was barely 5m up the tree.
Some seem to think that if we collect litter, don’t mow lawns, reintroduce the odd animal, rewild some land, do some regen ag…
somehow this will save the natural world
We need radical change: altering our lives to give up space for nature - & we can possibly save ourselves too
Heavy rain overnight so this Barn owl out hunting later than usual this morning. The long grass is very wet so between hunts sitting on the tents with wings out stretched to dry off, occasionally being buzzed by passing Rooks.
What exactly are you up to @Guildford_Golf ? This area of complete devastation was home to Bullfinches, Linnets, Greenfinches, Goldfinches, Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs and supports 1000s of plants & invertebrates. Now it's gone. Why do you need to do this? SO DEPRESSING!!! @SurreyWT
Scrub communities remain an under-valued aspect of our ecosystems
Some grassland people seeing it as the enemy. Some woodland people seeing it as a transition phase that we need to get through asap
Yet a dynamic scrub & grass mosaic is diverse, resilient & beautiful
delighted to discover Common Cow-wheat in my wild lawn.
I've never seen it in the nearby woodland so I wonder how it got here, ants aid the distribution of its seeds so maybe that's the answer.
