@Jim_SullivanIN@jstewartIndy Even with the possible disagreement, I’ll happily celebrate the common ground there, especially when several other replies are “troubled youths are animas and must be kept away from our children” including one vile commenter advocating eugenics.
@Jim_SullivanIN@jstewartIndy I agree wholeheartedly and you sound verbatim like many of the Democratic electeds who I strongly align with and respect on this issue. Even if we likely diverge on what creating a society that supports 2-P households looks like and if that includes neglecting one-parent families
@jstewartIndy And I probably wouldn’t frame it as highest risk youths having the least “interest” per se — I think all kids essentially want to be kids and not get caught up in shady stuff. I would say highest risk youths have factors that push/pull more strongly but not a question of interest
@jstewartIndy That’s a valid point. I think it can’t be mandatory b/c then it just feels like being held “against their will” like in school. I think it has to be more carrot than stick and that means not every youth would utilize these resources but it’d be more effective for those that do.
@jstewartIndy I’m aware the simplistic pie-in-they-sky liberal worldview that “Oh just pay kids to plant trees in the summer and have them play Uno afterschool” and throwing money at social programs is not the solution but I think there’s still lotta potential there if executed wisely.
@jstewartIndy Technically yes but more marginal and prob not worth it from an education standpoint. I think there’s much higher ROI from maintaining the structure of a school-setting outside the classroom with summer jobs programs and after-school spaces like Boys and Girls Club.
@CatholicSat Not that that was even close to the first time that that idea has been raised. St. John XXIII is arguably the first to lay the groundwork for the just peace theory and Francis was first to explicitly make that case in-depth in writing.
@ijimaia@Dontskylertalk They were never progressives — they’ve always been like this but now they feel more comfortable saying shit like this out loud. Sound familiar to anyone?
@EricMGarcia Very precisely threads a needle of using humor as a pretext to make the dude uncomfortable and implicitly but clearly call him out without derailing the televised performance that I don’t think any other actor at the time would’ve done.
@EricMGarcia Digusting snapshot of recent history that this “kiss” even happened. But honestly impressive that Jim Carrey had the quick thinking and will to respond this way. Had he not been immediately called on stage, I think it would’ve gone unmentioned the rest of the night.
