Not stars. Not planets. Not dark matter. Plasma.

Plasma is the fourth state of matter. It forms when gas is so energized that electrons strip away from atoms entirely. It's what the sun is made of. It's lightning. It's the aurora borealis lighting up the sky above the poles.
Some researchers have gone further, suggesting plasma may be capable of self-organizing in ways that challenge our definitions of life and intelligence.
That idea isn't in my books because it's convenient for the story. It's in my books because it's real science that nobody has fully explained yet.

The universe is already strange enough. I'm just following where it leads.

In 2007, a team of physicists published a paper showing that plasma can spontaneously form helical structures that replicate and transmit information. The authors were careful. They didn't claim plasma is alive. They described something that shared the basic signatures of life.

That paper is part of why plasma shows up in the Tachyon Tunnel series as something more than a power source.

Time does not pass the same everywhere. That's not science fiction. That's a fact your phone depends on every day.

GPS satellites move fast. Relativity says time runs slightly slower for them because of that speed, and slightly faster because they're farther from Earth's gravity. Without corrections for both effects, GPS would drift by miles per day.
We built time dilation into our infrastructure before most people knew the term.

Tachyons are theoretical particles that travel faster than light. According to relativity, they would have imaginary mass, and could even move backward through time.
That sounds like fantasy. It isn't.

The math inside relativity doesn't rule them out. It just makes them deeply uncomfortable. Physicists explored tachyon theory seriously enough to publish equations, run experiments, and argue about the consequences.

In the Tachyon Tunnel series, tachyons aren't a shortcut. They're unstable, dangerous, and unforgiving. Using them means accepting paradox as a practical risk, not a philosophical puzzle.
