INJURY UPDATE: Star WR Koby Howard will not be available for Penn State this week vs. Michigan, Matt Campbell said Tuesday.
There was speculation that he could make his return after missing the last three games with an injury. The Nittany Lions have a bye next week, then face Purdue on October 31.
“I think it’s a post-bye week conversation. Obviously, Koby is doing a really great job in terms of working his way back. If anybody’s going to get back sooner than later, it’ll be Koby Howard just because of how he works. But that’s probably a post-bye week conversation for sure.”

Penn State ponied up a large sum of cash to bring Matt Campbell to Happy Valley, but college football analyst Josh Pate expressed a harsh belief about the school’s potential financial willingness to help Campbell achieve on-field results:
“This is not a Matt Campbell thing to me. It's a talent deficiency thing, and they're not going to fix it overnight. But I do think a decision has to be made up there, and it's your decision to make. You got to decide how much you're going to invest in football, because you got to be a big spender at Penn State.
“…I will tell you, the expectation around the rest of the Big Ten, just to let you in on a little secret, is that Penn State's not going to be serious enough to financially back Matt Campbell and that coaching staff, but also that talent acquisition mechanism there.”

After an anemic showing at Northwestern, Penn State’s offense showed signs of life against USC.
Despite the loss, WR Chase Sowell believes the Nittany Lions are heading in the right direction going into the second half of the year:
“Do I think we are where we need to be? No. I think we can still keep growing. But I definitely think we took a step forward.”

The start of the Matt Campbell era of Penn State football looks much different at the midway point of the 2026 season than many expected in August.
Even after a third consecutive loss on Saturday night, Campbell saw some areas for optimism heading into the second half of the year:
"We have to continue to improve what we are, what we're doing, what are we going to be on defense, what are we going to continue to be on offense, and we've got to continue to find a pathway forward.
"We’ve had some growth tonight in some areas of that for sure. We’re going to have to continue to pound away at it. There's no wavering, there's no flinching in terms of what we want to do. We have to continue to get better at what we want to do."

Rocco Becht on how Penn State football breaks out of its three-game losing streak:
“It’s the tough. It’s the discipline. It’s the ability to finish. Those things, you can’t teach that in practice; you can’t teach that in the film room. You got to be able to come out and do it on Saturdays, and we’re just not doing that right now.
“It’s a self-assessment. You’ve got to look yourself in the mirror [and say] ‘How bad do you want it?’”
