We lay flat on the ground, waiting to reach some food to carry back to our children.

I can never forget those scenes. I used to go there to bring food for my children, to what we called the “point of death.” We lay on the ground under the sound of gunfire so we wouldn’t be hit. We saw soldiers shooting while we clung to the earth, just trying to stay alive.

Maybe the bullet didn’t hit me…
but it would pass beside me and hit someone behind me,
and sometimes someone in front of me.

I remember my friends and I lying on the ground under the threat of death, yet we were laughing loudly, looking toward the source of the gunfire, saying, “He’s shooting at us… it looks like he’s going to kill us.” It was a strange laugh… I don’t know if it was because we had grown used to death, because hunger exhausted our minds, or because it was a hysterical laugh born from fear and madness in that moment.

But I know one thing…
I will never forget those days. 💔
