Shocking Personal Story
Last night, my wife and I had a truly traumatic experience that we will never forget.
We were driving on the M1 late last night when we noticed the car in front of us weaving from lane to lane, veering onto the hard shoulder, and then back to the center. It was clear that the driver was either drunk or unwell and completely out of control. Another driver in a van also noticed this, and together, we both drove slowly behind him to prevent other traffic from attempting to overtake, as he was likely to cause a serious accident.
From the start, we called 999 and reported the situation to the Garda in the area. After a long delay, they finally agreed to send a car. We pleaded with them to intervene before the driver killed himself or someone else.
The driver’s behavior became increasingly erratic. At one point, the van driver took a bold step by driving ahead of him and slowing down to force him to pull over.
When the car eventually stopped, my wife stayed on the phone with the Garda while I got out on the hard shoulder. Together with the van driver, we approached the car and managed to get the driver to open his window. The man, who appeared to be in his 50s or 60s, was clearly intoxicated and the smell of alcohol was unmistakable.
I asked him would he hand over his keys and leave his car where it was. I begged him to stop and told you are going to kill somebody or yourself. The van driver even offered him a lift, begging him to stop driving. However, he replied in a drunken state that he was “fine,” then closed his window again. He suddenly drove off, nearly running us over as he swerved back onto the motorway.
We immediately called the Garda again and informed them that the driver had passed another exit and was heading further down the motorway, putting more lives at risk. They said they would update the report.
We thought we had lost sight of him and felt there was nothing more we could do, but about 10 minutes later, we came upon a scene of devastation. His car was destroyed on the side of the road, with parts of the engine and a wheel scattered in the middle of the motorway. He had crashed into an innocent family of three, whose car was left wrecked and had done a 360 on the other side of the motorway. Another car had then hit debris and wheel from the crash, and their vehicle was also destroyed.
We pulled over to help. The drunk driver staggered out of his car and began urinating in the bushes, completely oblivious to the destruction he had caused.
Thankfully and shockingly nobody seemed badly injured and my wife and I quickly helped the family of three get safely across the motorway, away from oncoming traffic. The van driver arrived soon after and used his vehicle to shield the victims and shocked passengers from further danger as parts of the cars continued to be struck by other vehicles.
I called the emergency services again, and eventually, the drunk driver was arrested, and the victims were treated.
This entire ordeal was completely preventable. The driver was given so many opportunities to stop and avoid disaster. After the crash, I confronted him and reminded him that I had warned he would cause an accident. In his drunken state, he simply grunted and showed no remorse.
I truly hope justice prevails. Thankfully, all the victims survived and will be able to spend Christmas with their families.

Tonight while we’re watching the rugby or in the pub, I’m thinking of those in #Midleton and in East #Cork whose businesses have been destroyed, whose homes have been flooded and who don’t have a dry bed to sleep in. Last Friday they were probably doing what we’re doing tonight…
