Japan continues to set the global benchmark for earthquake engineering. From the videos we've seen, it's remarkable how many structures remained standing despite the powerful shaking—a testament to decades of engineering, strict building codes, and quality execution.
As a structural engineer in Türkiye, I hope we continue moving toward this same level of construction quality and code compliance. Earthquakes don't have to become disasters when buildings perform as they're designed to.
Most importantly, my thoughts are with everyone affected by the earthquake. Wishing the injured a full recovery and the impacted communities strength in the days ahead.
🇯🇵 More earthquake footage, this time from inside the Kagoshima Airport in Japan.
You can see light pendants swinging while patrons just go about their day waiting for their orders.
This is what good emergency preparedness looks like.

The Cybertruck has become one of the biggest flops in the history of the automobile industry. It sold just under 40,000 units in its first full year, a massive shortfall from the original sales target of 250,000 vehicles per year.
This year, only around 7,100 units have been registered so far, highlighting the sharp decline in demand and raising serious questions about the vehicle’s long-term commercial success.
The story offers a few clear lessons for innovators and entrepreneurs. Commercial success and political influence are not the same thing. Elon Musk has become one of the most influential political voices in the world, but political influence does not automatically translate into consumer support.
When a brand becomes closely associated with polarising political narratives, some consumers embrace it, while others walk away.
Hype is also not demand. A product can generate enormous publicity, dominate social media, and attract millions of views, yet still fail to meet its commercial expectations if consumers ultimately decide not to buy it.
More broadly, it is a reminder that toxic political narratives can carry commercial risks. When a company’s leader becomes deeply involved in divisive politics, the company’s products can become symbols in a political culture war rather than simply products competing on quality, price, and performance. That can alienate part of the market.
This is more evident in Tesla’s experience in Europe, which shows that political influence does not always translate into commercial success. Following Elon Musk’s support for Donald Trump and his increasingly divisive political interventions, Tesla suffered a sharp decline in European sales during 2025, with many consumers turning away from the brand.
The episode demonstrates that when a business becomes closely associated with polarising political narratives, it risks alienating a significant portion of its customer base.

By the way the beam reinforcement looks inadequate considering this is the midspan of the beam and the ties are 6mm or 8mm diameter at most from what I observed which is really small.
Visited a friend recently and this caught my eye. This is in Sakarya a high risk area when it comes to earthquakes. Of course you can't come to a definite conclusion on the safety risks that this type of applications pose without looking at the design project.
