A few thoughts about the #SCOTUS arguments today. Of course, conversion therapy should be banned. To begin with, it’s been rejected by almost every reputable psychiatric and psychological organization. That should be enough reason.

Second, there is no real evidence that it works and there are few protocols for those who practice what is now seen as an outdated, discredited and dangerous approach. I’ve known several people who have undergone conversion therapy under the guise of “religious reasons” and have seen that it can cause immense mental, psychological and spiritual harm that sometimes takes years, even decades, to recover from. Studies show that trying to force someone to change their sexuality can end up causing anxiety, depression and even lead to suicide.

For straight people who think it’s a good idea, or even not a bad idea, I often say, “Do you think any amount of therapy could make you gay?”

As for the “free speech” argument, here’s how I see it. A person has the freedom to say that another person should do something harmful. That does not mean it shouldn’t be banned by the state. In other words, you have the freedom to say to someone, “Jump off the Empire State Building and you’ll feel much better.” But the state should still put up guardrails on the observation decks to prevent people from harming themselves. That's just common sense.

Conversion therapy programs are, from all the evidence I’ve seen and all the people I’ve spoken with who have been through them, dangerous. (Check out the tragic story of Alana Chen, which has been well documented, if you have any doubts.) So the practice should be banned, as it has been in several states, for the above reasons.

And, to me, the “Christian values” argument seems to be something of a Trojan horse. People should be accepted for who they are and how they were born. Like it or not, understand it or not, this is how God made them. Accepting the way God made them is part of the “respect, compassion and sensitivity” that the Catechism calls for.

Most of all, it’s not a Christian value to do harm to someone.

Tonight I was contacted by Polk County Sheriff Scott Sawyer.

Gracelyn Ward (age 4) and her sister Andrea Ward (18 months) are missing.

The children were left with Desiree Ward and a Brian Johnson, both adults. They were located in the Hatfield/Potter area.

The mother is unable to locate the two children, Ward or Johnson. They were last heard from at 2 PM today.

Johnson is from Texas and is driving a black Chevrolet Silverado with Texas tags. The truck has a “locally hated” sticker on the back glass.

I was asked to get this information out ASAP and will update as needed.
