I fundamentally disagree with this framing that it was merely “elements” of the Serbian state which facilitated Mladic’s funeral. A military honor guard escorting and guarding the remains of a convicted genocidaire is the state; if any institution in any country represents the state it is the armed forces.

That said, this statement clearly represents an effort by the most senior EU officials to distance themselves from @Pinhopau obscene comments yesterday. And that matters because it shows that the EU is not indifferent to the anger of Bosnians, and when citizens and friends of Bosnia and the Western Balkans speak with one voice, things can still move quickly. That is an important lesson.

As for @Pinhopau, she still owes the @SrebrenicaMC a formal and public apology. And her resignation should be a no brainer demand for any cabinet in Brussels which understands the power of words.

The images from Ratko Mladić’s funeral yesterday in Belgrade were shocking.

Ratko Mladić was a convicted war criminal. He was responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. He died while serving a life sentence for the Srebrenica genocide and other crimes.

The elements of official support and the presence of some senior Serbian officials at the funeral are deeply regrettable. They demonstrate a failure to confront a dark chapter in Europe’s recent history and contradict the values underpinning Serbia’s path towards the European Union.

Our thoughts are with all the victims of the crimes committed in the countries of former Yugoslavia.
