I get that some people might like "simpler" experiences, and that Eternal can feel stressful. But man... 2016's gameplay feels so stale after playing Eternal or TDA.
Also saying that 136 layoffs are deserved, is being a scumbag, plain and simple.
Doom the Dark Ages Revelations is sooo good, how should we reward the devs? Oh yeah, lay them off. Fuck you Xbox I'm still mad about this.
I really do fear for what is next for id Software if basically all of the idTech team were laid off, we do NOT need id on Unreal Engine.
James K. Polk promised to serve a single term. He kept his word. And that one term destroyed him.
Few presidents ever reshaped the country faster. In four years Polk provoked and won a war with Mexico, took California and the Southwest, settled the Oregon boundary, and pushed the United States all the way to the Pacific. It was the largest expansion of American territory since Jefferson bought Louisiana.
He did it by burning himself to the wick. Polk ran the government almost single-handedly. He refused to delegate, rarely left Washington, and worked ten and twelve hour days for four straight years. By the time he handed the office to Zachary Taylor on March 4, 1849, he was fifty-three years old and physically broken.
He never recovered. One hundred and three days later, on June 15, he was dead, the shortest retirement of any president in history.
Some men leave the White House and get decades. Polk got barely three months.
He poured everything he had into the job, and there was nothing left when he set it down.
I’m so sorry for everyone at id Software affected by these layoffs.
I know what it feels like to leave id while id goes on. It’s a strange and painful thing to step away from a place that holds so much of your work, friendships and history.
The people at id have done a great job moving that legacy forward. DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein are not easy names to carry on, especially in today’s industry. The last few games showed real care, skill and respect for what those worlds mean to people.
A note on digital preservation: id's history is critically important to the history of games. I’ve preserved id’s complete early history from our start at Softdisk through to August 6, 1996, including materials and assets that, as far as I know, id itself no longer has. I hope someone is doing the same for the company’s ongoing legacy (the work, code, assets, stories and the people behind them).
I’m thinking of everyone at id today, and everyone else affected by yesterday’s layoffs. Romero Games was there a year ago. I know how devastating it is, and my heart's with all of you.
