It’s very unlikely that a full-strength hurricane would hold together with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph and make landfall along the Southern California coast.
A strong tropical storm (sustained winds 39mph-73mph) did make landfall on September 25, 1939 in the Long Beach area (see attached synoptic map)..
The storm produced damaging winds and flooding rains across parts of our region.
Forecast models have been hinting at a tropical system holding together as it moves up the coast of Baja next weekend..However, that storm has yet to even officially form yet. With that said, the conditions (sea surface temperature off of our coast) are ideal for a system to impact us in some way..even just with some heavy tropical rains..Stay tuned!
