🇬🇧🇷🇺 BRITAIN CONFRONTS LAVROV AT G20: “RUSSIA WILL NOT WIN THIS WAR”
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband delivered a forceful condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine directly to Sergey Lavrov during the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting.
“We all know who the aggressor is in this war.”
Miliband cited a Russian drone attack on a railway station in Dnipro that he said had killed 15 people, placing it alongside the wider civilian suffering caused by Moscow’s invasion.
He then challenged Putin’s original expectations of a quick victory, arguing that Ukrainian resistance and international support had frustrated Russia’s plans.
“You will not win this war.”
Miliband urged Lavrov to acknowledge Russia’s failure to achieve its objectives and deliver that message to Putin himself.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas reinforced the criticism, accusing Lavrov of spreading falsehoods while showing no genuine willingness to negotiate peace.
She insisted that Moscow must demonstrate its intentions through concrete actions rather than diplomatic statements, including steps towards a ceasefire in the Black Sea.
Asked why she refused to pose for a photograph with Lavrov, Kallas answered:
“We must not normalize war crimes at this table.”
The confrontation highlighted a fundamental disagreement over diplomacy: European officials are demanding evidence of Russian willingness to end the fighting, while Moscow continues its military campaign.
For Ukraine’s European supporters, maintaining diplomatic channels does not mean treating the invasion as an ordinary disagreement between states.
